DL385P Gen 8 internal sata lead

Hi,

I have just purchased a very nice HP DL385p Gen 8 server and a USB 3 PCI-E card to go with it. The card needs extra power from a SATA connection but I cannot see anything on board that could provide power other than an optical drive port. I need some way of getting this card powered, any ideas? I do not have an optical drive so am happy to use this port if I could find a cable to fit it....

Thanks

G

Hi, you need a power cable that's right?

Re: DL385P Gen 8 internal sata lead

Actually I need a SATA lead to provide power to a PCI-E card - a normal SATA connection on the end to plug in to the card and the only way I can see the other end connecting to the main board is via the optical drive socket...

Re: DL385P Gen 8 internal sata lead

Thanks for your post but that isn't what I'm after. We have one of these;

http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/products/oas/product-detail.html?oid=5153603

So, we need a connector that plugs in to the sata connector on the back of the card to somewhere in the server - the only place I can see that it could connect is the optical drive socket on the motherboard.

Thanks,

Graeme

Re: DL385P Gen 8 internal sata lead

I googled around and found there is a supported option for this server:

HP RDX Removable Disk Backup System

This is USB 3.0, so I wonder how to connect?

The quickspecs

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/productbulletin.html#spectype=worldwide&type=html&docid=13036

say:

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0; however if the host device does not have a USB 3.0 port, the user will not be able to experience the full transfer rate performance that their RDX USB 3.0 system offers. HP recommends the following controller for a user who currently only has USB 2.0: Startech 2 port PCI Express SuperSpeed USB 3.0 card.

So I assume HP has tested these servers with this USB 3.0 card and found they can support this combination?

It looks like the 4 port card needs extra power, but the 2 port card doesn't.

However, I assume even the 4port card may work if you only use 2 ports.

Consider to test this.

This is the connector you mentioned, right?

Hope this helps!

Re: DL385P Gen 8 internal sata lead

Thanks Torsten, I'll give that one a try - although the 2 port does also have a power connection on the back...

Thanks for taking the time to help!
