DL580 G! removing 2 cpus
It has 4 700 Mb cpus and it boots with them.
But when I try and take 2 out (licensing issues) all I get is a blinking amber light on the front of the server. I wonder if I need to go into the bios and change something before I take the 2 cpus out. I do not know what order they are suppose to be removed I cannot find anything that may guide me in the right direction.
Any help would be great. Also I do not get an option to go into the bios from boot up do I need to use the smartstart cd?

Re: DL580 G! removing 2 cpus
be sure to leave the CPUs in sockets 1& 2 , there is the bootstrap CPU.
And 2nd don't forget to take out the PPMs(VRMs) of CPU 3&4.

Re: DL580 G! removing 2 cpus
that server does not have PPMs
check this manual
can help you with processor locations and which remove
http://ftp.uniroma2.it/Digital/compaq/supportinformation/152301-003.pdf
also you can try only removing 3 processors and add a second one

Re: DL580 G! removing 2 cpus
If you are using a Microsoft based O/S (2000, 2003) for example you can limit the number of CPU's seen by the O/S without physically removing them using a boot.ini switch.
Example /NUMPROC=2 will limit the number of CPU's to 2 even though you have 4 installed.
This way you won't potentially damage anything.
See this BOOT.INI reference.

I hope this helps.
