DL580 G5 Smart Array Controller upgrade

Hi Folks,

I have a DL580 G5 Server with an integrated P400i Controller and want to upgrade the Controller to a p812 Controller. I have a few datadisks an two system disks. On the system disks is Windows 2008 SP2 installed. Can I install the Controller in the server and connect the new P812 to the system disks without any changes in the OS? Will the OS boot with no errors, or do I had to install the window from scratch?

thanks

Re: DL580 G5 Smart Array Controller upgrade

Yep, you should be able to. We've done it on the P410i to an p812 before.

Clear any config first

Steps are basically.

1. Take a backup first!

2. shutdown

3. Install new card and power on

4. Reconfigure bios to boot from new card, power down

5. Move sas cabling over

6. Power on

7. You'll be prompted potentially on which array config to use. Make sure you select the disk configuration. DO NOT SELECT the config stored on the Smart Array controller as it will toast your array.

I suppose the p812 and p400i uses the same drivers so perhaps it's not necessary to boot into the OS and make sure the p812 is seen there before changing the cabling?

Depends on the OS, when it doubt manually install the p812 drivers in advance.

Re: DL580 G5 Smart Array Controller upgrade

i looked at HP.com and the drivers are the same version:

6.24.0.32 for P400

6.24.0.32 for P812

so i think this should work.

thx
