I recently bought a DL580 Gen 1 Server,
But cant seem to install any os on it.
I tried Win XP, 2003, w2k,

all fail to load setup and stall at the blue screen wich sais "Setup is starting windows"

I tried multiple things, Updated bios, Firmware,
Removed as much Ram as possible, Disconnected al Pci cards.

and how do i enter the bios "Might be a dumb question but cant find it"

Menno:

You need a System Utilities partition I believe in order to get "into" the bios.

To install a System Utilities partition, you would need SMart Start 5.5 CD.

Start there.

Re: DL580 Wont install Server 2003

Are you using the Smart Start CD to g oan integrated installation? or are you doing a manual install with just the Windows CD?

Re: DL580 Wont install Server 2003

I dont know how to start integrated installation, I run Smartstart and run the array config etc, And i put some drivers on a floppy.
During the installation F6, and load the drivers but most of em are already on Win 2003.
so then it continues install and stalls on the blue screen sayin "Setup is starting windows"

Any help would be appriciated

Re: DL580 Wont install Server 2003

If you boot with the Smart Start CD, you should be prompted to to do an "Assisted" Installation.

Smart Start asks you some qustions and then copies all the Smart Start files/drivers and your Windows distribution to the local drive, reboots and runs setup with an unattend file that it builds.

The only thing migt be that it might not support Win2k3. I don't remember, I haven't touched a G1 system in ages.

Re: DL580 Wont install Server 2003

Hi,

You probably need to reset the config so that when it boots it recognises that it is an unconfigured system - then you set the OS type and boot SmartStart.

You can reset by doing a system erase (you can do that from RDP, boot floppies, SmartStart, etc). Or more simply, change the DIP switch in the system, (there is a sticker on the lid telling you what all the switches do). Turn ON the reset switch, power on system, power off, turn OFF reset and power back on. Should then report as unconfigured.

Re: DL580 Wont install Server 2003

This message "Setup is starting windows" is almost always caused by having the wrong OS selected in the system configuration utility. You should have Windows 2000 selected for all versions of Windows that you mentioned. The OS selection affects the resources assigned to the hardware.

If you don't have the utility installed on the drive, then you will need to either boot off a Smart Start 5.5 cd or use the SCU floppies:

The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..
