DL740 memory failure crashed server

We have a DL740 G1 with 2-256MB DIMMS installed in all 5 cartridges in slots 1 and 2. We also have 4-1024MB DIMMS installed in all 5 cartridges in slots 3-6. We had a DIMM go bad and the server crashed (ASR shutdown). When DIMMs are installed in the configuration (the same in all 5 cartridges) shouldn't it be redundant? Or do they ALL DIMMs have to be the same size in order to acheive the proper redundancy? We're running PSP 7.10A as well if that matters. Windows Server 2003 Ent.

Steve:

If it were my system, I'd get the latest SmartStart/PSP before putting a lot of energy into "shooting the bug". Version 7.40 is available for download using the link(s) found here:

Re: DL740 memory failure crashed server

Class 20, Code 3 .... not mandatory related to memory, might indicate some HW problem, resource conflict, or faulty component
Before you jump to any replacement

verify latest ROM
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/21960.html

you can find rules and Settings at: " memory configuration " search results

Re: DL740 memory failure crashed server

We've already identified it's a bad DIMM. Our concern is we thought the DIMM's were redundant the way we have them configured. What in the PSP will (or could) affect the DIMM redundancy? Like I said we know it's a bad dimm and have already removed it in order to bring the server back up while we get a replacement. But the server shoudn't have crashed because of a bad DIMM since it's redundant. Is there any "special" settings or configuration I can check to be sure in the future this won't happen again and verify the redundancy is "turned on" or working?

Re: DL740 memory failure crashed server

OK -- I see where I can check this configuration during the POST. Once we get the new DIMM installed I'll be sure to run this. Thanks.

Steve:

Do you have this driver installed?

BTW, your memory is configured correctly, assuming all the 256MB pieces have the same part number and the 1GB pieces do too.
Do you have W2K3 SP1 installed?

Re: DL740 memory failure crashed server

Yes I do have this software installed. I have version 1.0.135.3. We will be rolling out Win2K3 SP1 on 12/10. Is there something in SP1 that would help?
I'll be checking on the speed of the memory soon. Unfortunately we don't buy HP memory because of cost (we buy Kingston) and HP SIM doesn't give me a whole lot of info on the DIMMs since they're not HP.
