DL980 server hanging for no apparent reason

The server is loaded with Red-Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 and connected to an FC SAN. In average, it hangs once every week for no apparent reasons. We cannot trace the cause from any particular log or event. We have to physically press the power button to reset it before work resume.

Please advice

Which logs have you checked? Just the OS logs, or the IML too?

Please run:

hpasmcli -s "show iml"

 or:

hplog -v

If you have the Proliant Support Pack (or even just the hp-health RPM) installed, either of these commands should display the Integrated Management Log. It is a hardware error log, and should indicate if the server is experiencing e.g. problems with incoming power.

RHEL 5.4 is rather old: the current RHEL 5 update level is now 5.9. In particular, the RHEL 5.5 release fixed multiple known bugs in FC HBA drivers.
