DLT 20/40 Tape Drive Hardware Failure

My tape drive has all the lights blinking on the right hand side of the drive. It's still under warranty, so the distributor replaced the drive. It worked OK for 2 nights then it did the same thing again. Once again, he replaced the drive and it failed immediately with the exact same characteristics.

Here's what we've replaced thus far (even Compaq was no help over the phone);
1. Entire new system board
2. power supply
3. Two (2) tape drives
4. SCSI-2 cable

It seems that the tape drive fails it's own POST test upon startup of the server. There are no messages displayed by the computer that it has failed (i.e. Controller shows correct SCSI ID and device name). The Compaq support guy told me that it was a software isse. This simply can't be because the device fails before any system software even loads!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've tried changing the SCSI bus speed and that didn't help either!

I came across a similar issue and ended up updating System BIOS, System Configuration Utility, Support Paq which resolved the issue. No guarantees but it's worth a try. Please contact our Storage Works Group at 1-800-786-7967.
