DS10 HDD Failure?

During booting of an AlphaServer DS10, it gives an error message saying something like "CANNOT FIND dka0.0.0.15.0". When a SHOW DEV is done, the HDD (ie DKA0) is not present in the list. How can I be sure that the HDD is out? Is there any device failure light which I can see? Will a replacement of HDD work in this case?? Thanks in advance...
