Different Disks in Same RAID

Hi Folks,
Is it possible to add 146GB 10K RPM disks with 72GB 15K RPM disks in same RAID, either RAID1 or RAID0. The controller is 642.

Re: Different Disks in Same RAID

Hello Caster,

This can be done as long as the drive is compatible with the server. I would need model number or a spare number to know for sure.

The problem is this, with a 146GB drive in there, only 72GB of it will be used and the rest unallocated. This isn't a huge deal though. The problem arises in the speed different of the drives. The array will slow down to the slowest drive. So by adding 1 10k drive, the whole array drops to 10k.

So in short, it is possible, but it will affect performance.

Hi Caster,

It is posible but in RAID1 you can ONLY configure to the size of SMALLEST drive among.

Re: Different Disks in Same RAID

Hi,

In your case even if you have 142GB and 72 GB you can configure a RAID1 volume of 72GB only.

Siva.
