Disabling second processor

Is it possible to disable the second processor (temporily) of a dual proc system to perform some single proc baseline testing without having to remove it? Compaq documentation states that removing a proc requires a new heatsink. I do NOT want to go that route. I'd rather disable in the BIOS or something. Any help, hints, etc ?
