Disabling the CD-Rom drive on a ProLiant DL580 G5

Is there a way to disable the cd-rom on a 580 g5 via the BIOS?

I cannot seem to find the option. Is my only option to physically disconnect it?

I don't know.

But I have read the RBSU manual
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00191707/c00191707.pdf

Page 112.

You could try:
In the Boot order menu.
Select the CD drive
Hit enter, and see if you are allowed to disable it.

Thanks for the response...I'm not trying to remove it from the boot order, trying to disable it completely.

Yes,

But there's a note saying, that if you disable a device, you will have to reboot, for it to take action.

see page 112.

So, I figured, maybe it's possible to disable from there.

You're welcome.

It's a sling shot.

I'll go offline now.

Re: Disabling the CD-Rom drive on a ProLiant DL580 G5

If you are worried about someone doing things with the CD-ROM drive, that means people whom you do not entirely trust have physical access to the system. Physical access means that modulo having to reboot (and so be noticed) they would still have the ability to re-enable the CD-ROM drive.

While it would not close that loophole completely, it would raise the bar if you physically removed the drive. Now, not only do they have to have physical access to the system, and reboot it, they must also provide their own CD-ROM drive.

I am not trying to disable it for security purposes. There is a compatibility issue with Citrix XenServer, and a temporary fix is to disable the drive.

I still have not gotten a chance to reboot the server to attempt it again, I'll look today.

Rick - are you aware of a definite way to disable it via the BIOS?

Always good to provide as much context as possible at the start :)

As for disabling the device at the BIOS level, I am afraid that I am not familiar with such a mechanism. Haven't had to do so.
