Disk Drive Cloning - HPDL360 G5 SAS Drives

I have a HPDL360 G5 with 3 SAS drives configured in a Raid 1 with hot swap configuration. I am trying to "clone" this server out. Typically, I'd remove a drive from my source server and insert it in my destination server and boot destination server to that drive. However, I cannot get the destination server to recognize new drive. What am I missing?

With 3 drives you can't have simple RAID 1. Either you have RAID 1 over 2 drives with the third configured as an online spare or all three are configured as RAID 5.

Sorry for any confusion. I do have Raid 1 with a hot spare configured.

Hi,
supposing you have a raid 5 (raid 0 + hot spare), you will not able to estract an HD from the enclosure and insert that disk into another enclosure of another server.
for sure the new server will not recognize the HD.
in this case, the way, is to "clone" the disk or volume.
try to clone disk with a "cloning software" like acronis true image.

you can download a trial version that stay active for 30 days.
so, you can clone your volume to another phisycal or logical HD.
after of that you can remove youor drive(s) and insert them into the new enclosure of the new server.
it works fine.
after the trial period you can decide if buy it or not.

Thanks Jackal for the response. However, I do not have RAID 5 .. I have RAid 1 with a hot spare configured.

Rose what kind of controllers do you have in source and destination servers. Is the destination server also DL360 G5. If it is - most DL360 G5 models do not have active the top 2 drive bays. So make sure that you use one of the 4 bottom drive bays.

To clone a RAID array, 1,5,10, whatever, you will need software that can see the controller correctly.

Ghost is one option, but I would recommend the Rapid Deployment Pack from HP. It's a piece out of the Altiris Management Suite and works very well. It does require that you setup an imaging server and some in-depth network configuration PXE/DHCP. If you have a med-large environment that you image the same type of server a lot, RDP is a true lifesaver.

Jackal - you call yourself an expert in Servers and you don't understand that a RAID1 mirror can have a HS? You must be thinking RAID0 - striping with no parity...
