Re: Disk Drive Cloning - HPDL360 G5 SAS Drives
supposing you have a raid 5 (raid 0 + hot spare), you will not able to estract an HD from the enclosure and insert that disk into another enclosure of another server.
for sure the new server will not recognize the HD.
in this case, the way, is to "clone" the disk or volume.
try to clone disk with a "cloning software" like acronis true image.
www.acronis.com
you can download a trial version that stay active for 30 days.
so, you can clone your volume to another phisycal or logical HD.
after of that you can remove youor drive(s) and insert them into the new enclosure of the new server.
it works fine.
after the trial period you can decide if buy it or not.
bye.

Re: Disk Drive Cloning - HPDL360 G5 SAS Drives
To clone a RAID array, 1,5,10, whatever, you will need software that can see the controller correctly.
Ghost is one option, but I would recommend the Rapid Deployment Pack from HP. It's a piece out of the Altiris Management Suite and works very well. It does require that you setup an imaging server and some in-depth network configuration PXE/DHCP. If you have a med-large environment that you image the same type of server a lot, RDP is a true lifesaver.
Jackal - you call yourself an expert in Servers and you don't understand that a RAID1 mirror can have a HS? You must be thinking RAID0 - striping with no parity...

Re: Disk Drive Cloning - HPDL360 G5 SAS Drives
I think you have to study a little bit more about raid.
try to take a look at that.
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/_common/br_host/_education/talk_about_raid.htm
it is not the Bible, but it's enough for you.
tell me the sense of raid 1 + Hot Spare.
the hot spare to rebuild WHAT ?
bye.

Re: Disk Drive Cloning - HPDL360 G5 SAS Drives
I've seen some "stars" near many names ... that everything were but not EXPERT.
but the way... I'm writing here to try to give some help to anyone I think I CAN HELP.
for free, obviously.
I've had - always - respect for the other people that are writing too.
and, if someone make a mistake I try to see that thing in the right way.
nobody, I think, write here to cause demage to anyone.
may be that exist RAID 1 + hot spare.
may be I lose something in this years.
give me some other information about RAID 1 + hot spare and you will be right with my excuse.
bye.
