Disk drives and controller channels

Okay, I need to settle a score. Is there a significant performance increase if you setup a mirrored set of disks on a single controller within the first channel in a separate drive cage and a RAID-5 set of disks on the second channel in a separate drive cage? I know there is a performance increase if they were separate controllers but that's not the case here. Has anyone run across a question like this and if so can you specify any pros or cons? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
