E200i Controller interim recovery

I have an DL350 G5 with an E200i controller.

=> ctrl all show config

Smart Array E200i in Slot 0   (sn: QT7AMW1845     )

array A (SAS, Unused Space: 0 MB)

logicaldrive 1 (68.3 GB, RAID 1+0, Interim Recovery Mode)

      physicaldrive 1I:1:1 (port 1I:box 1:bay 1, SAS, 72 GB, OK)
      physicaldrive 1I:1:2 (port 1I:box 1:bay 2, SAS, 72 GB, Failed)

array B (SAS, Unused Space: 0 MB)

      logicaldrive 2 (136.7 GB, RAID 5, OK)

      physicaldrive 1I:1:4 (port 1I:box 1:bay 4, SAS, 72 GB, OK)
      physicaldrive 2I:1:5 (port 2I:box 1:bay 5, SAS, 72 GB, OK)
      physicaldrive 2I:1:6 (port 2I:box 1:bay 6, SAS, 72 GB, OK)

   unassigned

      physicaldrive 2I:1:8 (port 2I:box 1:bay 8, SAS, 72 GB, OK)

As you can see one of the drives on array A is failed. I would like to define the unassigned drive as a hotspare. But for some unknown reason this ist not possible.

Thank you for your help.

Re: E200i Controller interim recovery

Which tool do you use?

You can assign an unused drives as hot spare for 1 or multible logical drives. In your case it should be possible to assign the unassigend drive as hot spare for both logical drives.

As far as I remember, there has been some fw issues in the past, with drives reporting to be slightly smaller than other models with the same size, hence it could not rebuild.

In you case i would replace the failed drive with the unassigned drive.

Even if you get the unused drive assigned as spare, the Smart Array still want you to replaced the failed drive. And it will remain in interim recovery mode untill you replace the failed drive.

When you got a hot spare, it will kick in, when you get a drive failure. And when you replace the filed drive, it will copy the data back to the new drive, and the hot spare will become spare again.

So:

1. Replace the failed drive.

2. Get BIOS / FW and drivers updated.

Re: E200i Controller interim recovery

I am using the ACU 9.40.12.0 and the ACU CLI. The Controller is using Firmware-Version 1.86.

I will try to replace the failed drive and see if the Array is strating to rebuild.

Is there a reason why the HotSpare can be assigned to Array B (Raid 5) but not to Array A Raid 1).

Re: E200i Controller interim recovery

Well, you're on the latest FW version.

I don't see any reason why you can't assign it to Array A, except if the disk is slightly larger.

You can try to upload  an AUD report to this thread.

I assume You have tryed both Array A and B alone?

It's possible you're not allowed to do changes to the array, when it's degraded.
