Email notification - possible?

Email notification - possible?

We have a number of ProLiant servers in our organisation. I have been hunting around for the last few weeks to try and find some utilities/tools that will monitor the servers, and send email notifications when the servers have problems. The main notifications I need is when there are problems with the hard disks, RAID problems, etc.

I have downloaded a few different packages from the HP site, but can't seem to find one that will do email notification. The packages I downloaded are: ProLiant Support Pack and Insight Manager.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers

Re: Email notification - possible?

Justin:

Insight Manager along with Server Management agents should be able to produce the e-mails that you are looking for.

I have not configured e-mail notification in this manner in a long while so things may have changed ab it, but remember being able to do it.

Re: Email notification - possible?

When I attempt to install Insight Manager 7 SP 2.3, it tells me that the install can't complete because I don't have snmp installed. How do I install/enable snmp?

The server is a ProLiant DL380.

Re: Email notification - possible?

Hi,

Uou can post it on mangement software thread. Where email notification i am not sure it is possible with insight manager but it can collect any type or error messages centrally from server in a group.

where in insight manager you there was option to send messages. Please get back to same thread they can confirm you about the same.

Re: Email notification - possible?

I got the SNMP windows service installed, then proceeded to install Insight Manager, then it claimed to need an SQL database to work.

Surely there is a less complicated application that can be installed that can monitor hardware and send email notifications?

Re: Email notification - possible?

Hi Justin,

Insight Manager 7 is end-of-life. Get yourself Systems Insight Manager 5.0 (it's also free to download from HP). You will need a database server - either SQL or the MSDE (basically a slimline SQL) that comes with SIM. You need the SNMP service and Insight Agents on all monitored servers.

Re: Email notification - possible?

So Insight Manager goes onto one server, and that server monitors all other ProLiant servers that have the Insight Agents installed on them?

Re: Email notification - possible?

If you have a small amount of servers requiring email notification, then you can use the Event Notifier, which is installed with the agents. Go under HP Management Agents in the start menu and select "Event Notifier Config". Once you do this you can walk through configuring email notification. This will need to be done on each server you need email notification from. If you want central monitoring and have the monitoring utility send emails, then you'll need Systems Insight Manager.

Re: Email notification - possible?

Get the ProLiant Support Pack from http://www.hp.com/servers/swdrivers

Re: Email notification - possible?

I've already installed that, it gives me a shortcut called "HP System Management Homepage". When I launch it, it gives me a webpage with various things. But I can't find anything to do with an agent or email notification using that tool.

Re: Email notification - possible?

Hi,

do you have a Program Group in the Start Menu called HP Management Agents? If the agents are properly installed there should be. Check to see if the agents are installed as services (HP Foundation Agent, Storage Agent, Server Agent, NIC Agent). As Terry says, there is an Event Notifier Config tool to set up e-mail notification. There is nothing in System Management Homepage to setup e-mails.

From my previous post:
Go under HP Management Agents in the start menu and select "Event Notifier Config".

Re: Email notification - possible?

Thanks for the help fellas. I should I have been clearer in my last post. I do have a folder under the start menu called "HP Management Agents". But the only shortcut under that folder is the "HP System Management Homepage". I don't have anything under that folder called "Event Notifer Config". Where do I get the software to add the Event Notifer?

Stephen, I also don't seem to have any of the services you mentioned.

Re: Email notification - possible?

OK, that means the agents are not installed, therefore no event notifier available Try reinstalling the Proliant support pack. Or have a look in the folder where you extracted the support pack files. Is there are file called cp005413.exe ? If so, just run that (it's the Insight Agents package), and see if it successfully installs.

Re: Email notification - possible?

If you have already installed the support pack, but the agents didn't get installed, then I suspect you don't have SNMP installed. I'd recommend installing this (add/remove Windows components, then select SNMP under Management and Monitoring tools), then reinstalling the agents (either the whole support pack or just the file, like Stephen recommended).

Re: Email notification - possible?

Thanks again for the help fellas. I've installed the "cp005413.exe", and now have the Event Notifer application. I've configured it, setup the email server, etc.

I've also installed the SNMP service. Do I need anything else installed for the Event Notifer to work? Does it work on it's own? Or do I need to install other applications to monitor the server and report problems to the Event Notifer?

After installing a lot of HP software trying to find the email notification, I started to get errors on startup, so I uninstalled it all, and now I have just the Event Notifer installed.
