Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

Hello,

Have a Proliant DL 380 G2 Windows 2K SP2
Rom Version P24-6/21/2001

Integrated Smart Controller 5i Firmware 1.16 Revision B

Compaq 64bit/66Mhz Fibre channel Host adapter card, drivers??

Integrated with StorageWorks MSA 1000 SAN Array and a StorageWorks SAN switch 16 - EL.

Using Backup Exec and Network Storage Executive 8.6 with the proper agents connected to a StorageTek L40 tape library with an integrated Fibre switch.

Being connected or disconnected to the Fibre switches we are still receiving Error 9's (disk I/O errors) which fail our backup jobs. This happens six times then the following errors occur...

Event ID: 9
Event source: cpqfcalm
Data:
0000: 0f 00 10 00 01 00 6a 00 ......j.
0008: 00 00 00 00 09 00 04 c0 .......??

0030: 00 00 00 00 07 00 00 00

and

Event Type: Error
Event Source: halfinchVRTS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Description:

With the problem starting with the controller I was hoping someone could help with the config and errors I described?

Thank you!!

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

See Microsoft's page on trouble-shooting event ID 9 at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q154690

As usual, MS says the cause could be a huge array of issues, but jumping through MS's hoops will narrow down the culprit: check to make sure all drivers & firmware are up to date, check cables & termination, check drives for errors, etc.

Do you know which device is being designated as "Seagate 0"? that device is mentioned twice in the errors you put in your post. Is it a hard drive or is it your tape drive? The answer to that question could point you in the right direction.

Good luck,

Alicia

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

Have read that and Q314093 but was curious on the Compaq side of things since it always starts with the Cpqfcalm reference. How can I know what exactly this is refering to? How can I view/update these settings, if need be?

How do you modify the Transfer rate?

The reference to Seagate 0 is the Seagate Utlrium 06242 1460 backup drive. We have two drives in the StorageTek L40, firmware at 0207. There are no errors being generated on the L40 backup library logs.

SCSI port
0 = CD Rom
1 = ATAPI
2 = Cpqcissm compaq SCSI Communicate CISS
3 = ID0 Tape 0
ID1 Tape 1
ID2 Changer, STK L40 0207

Thank you

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

Jeff,

Where are your tape devices configured? I can't tell if they are on the SCSI, Raid or FC controller. Tape devices are not supported on array controllers.

What is your controller and device config?

Ciao,

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

The tape devices are configured within the Storagetek L40 which has a built in FC router. We are going to bypass that with a SCSI VHD68 to DB 68 cable.

My guess is that cpqFCalm is the Fibre channel but was hoping that someone online could confirm this?

How can I access the controller and device configs?

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

Hello, I have the same problem with Proliant server, FC Tape Controler and TL891 Library with two DLT drives inside..
We have to equal systems and error is repeated on both.. So error is probably in something we have incommon.
System worked untill two weeks ago.

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

However, if you check on Veritas support page (link http://support.veritas.com/docs/191087) you will find an advice to change an registry key. That solution sounds promising, although unfortunately, it didn't help us..

There is software TMSC from HP Compaq for testing library. All the tests are completed successfully.. Interesting is the fact that Veritas usually puts drives offline when almost any kind of error occurs. Something like this is not happening here.

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

you should be able to telnet into the fiber to scsci bridge and view fiber to scsi mappings, SCSI information and trace logs of what is happening in the bridge You might be able to catch a trace when an error condition occurs. The buffer probably holds about 30 sec worth of info. You can copy and paste to a text file about every 30 sec to get a good history of whats going on. Be sure that the proper error reporting levels are turned on or the trace will not capture what you need. Is this a crossroads bridge? Do you have a support contract w/ STK? If so I would definitly open a call amd get an engineer on sight to set up the reporting on the bridge

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

We removed the Crossroads fibre router out of the equation and have gone SCSI from the Proliant to SCSI on the STK L40. We are still getting "The device, \device\scsi\cpqcissm1, did not respond within the timeout period" Event ID 9. Also, in the Applicaton log "Storage device "Seagate 1" reported an error on a request to write data to media. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

Re: Event 9 error, cpqfcalm and device I/O issues

I read a TID from Veritas reccomending that the the Library or autochanger should have a lower SCSI id than the the tape drives.
