Exchange Information Store Errors

Hi

We have a DL 380 with Smart array 6i controller (Firm rev B 2.36) Driver 12/10/2004 5.64.0.32 and are receiving the following errors in our application log on exchange:

Event ID 509 Performance, source ESS
A request to read from information store ...priv1.edb succeeded but took an abnormally long time (351 seconds) to be serviced by the OS.

Questions:

Will a array controller firmware or driver update help or is this a hardware cache memory issue?

Should I look at a setting on the controller card itself, such as turning off write cache or something similar?

Thanks

Re: Exchange Information Store Errors

Well you 're smart array version is 2.36 it think it at 2.76 (cp007619.exe)
History:
Version 2.76A (Enhancements)
Enhancements

Updated recommended hard drive firmware list with models that have been experiencing excessive SCSI command timeouts. When one of these drives is present, user will see a POST message recommending he upgrade the drive├в s firmware. Failure to upgrade may result in the bus down-shifting from Ultra 320 to Ultra 3.
Version 2.74A (Contains Bug Fixes)
Enhancements
1. Added POST messages informing users to upgrade their HDD firmware for certain models of hard drives to the latest available firmware version on the HP web site.
Fixes
1. Fixed an issue where Windows Server x64 would hang or blue screen when the Smart Array driver is installed or upgraded on a system that has greater than 7GB RAM.

2. Fixed Array behavior to prevent unwanted device migrations by detecting conditions, where a SCSI disk drive unexpectedly changes its SCSI ID.

3. Fixed an issue where inquiries to the logical drive would succeed even after the drive is physically removed.

Version 2.68A (Contains Bug Fixes)
Fixes
1. Fixed an issue that can occur during configuration (with the ACU) of an MSA20 or MSA500. In a Windows environment, the issue can result in a blue-screen condition.

2. Disabled a function designed to detect a condition where a SCSI disk drive unexpectedly changes its SCSI ID. This function was previously part of the FW for the SA-6400, SA-641 and SA-642 only.
Version 2.58B (Contains Bug Fixes)
Enhancements
1. Added support for the controller firmware to place a Monitoring and Performance stamp (M&P) on the disk drive, if it is missing from the drive.
2. Added split-mirroring support and a mirroring re-synchronization feature. This allows a RAID 1 volume to be split into two RAID 0 volumes and then combine the two RAID 0 volumes into a single RAID 1 volume.

3. Added an enhancement to allow an occasional SCSI command timeout without downshifting the SCSI bus to a lower speed.

4. Enhanced performance for drive rebuilds and RAID 5 and RAID 6 (ADG) configurations.

5. Added support for the 512MB Battery-Backed Write Cache (BBWC) option.

6. Added POST message 1717 "Disk Drive(s) Reporting OVERHEATED Condition".

7. Updated POST message 1794 "Array Accelerator batteries have failed to charge and should be replaced". This POST message will now display if this condition has occurred when no logical volumes are present or if cache has already been disabled.

Fixes
1. Fixed an issue with the component installer that may cause this component to not be recognized under the Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE). If you have previously upgraded to version 2.58 firmware another update is not needed.
2. Fixed an issue that causes the HP Insight Management Agents to display incorrect characters for the DL360 G4.

3. Improved event messages when the Smart Array 6400 is installed with two MSA20 enclosures. "Box 1" or "Box 2" is indicated in the event message for a disk drive removal or failure event.

4. Modified the PCI-X timing to prevent the Smart Array 641/642 and 6i from possibly becoming unresponsive during read requests when installed in a ProLiant DL760G2.

Version 2.48A (Contains Bug Fixes)
Fixes
Updated the battery charging firmware to reduce the frequency and duration of battery charging cycles. This helps prevent overcharging the battery, which can contribute to premature battery failures. This also reduces the time required for a battery recharge cycle to complete.
Updated the battery firmware to improve the sensing and reporting of battery health. This helps prevent battery status messages from alternating or indicating false status.

Updated the battery firmware to reduce the chances of deep discharging the battery. This helps to maintain the capacity of the battery in the event data was trapped in the cache over the specified backup duration.

Updated the battery firmware to keep the charge capacity during a controller firmware update. This helps prevent the inconvenience of battery back write cache becoming temporarily disabled due to a required recharge following a battery firmware update.

Wich DL 380 do you have G1, g2, g3, g4 or g5?

Re: Exchange Information Store Errors

So you need to upgrade 2.36 to 2.76
and you driver also from 5.64.0.32 to 5.76.0.32, i dont think the driver will a big difference but you firmware for the array will!!

Re: Exchange Information Store Errors

Hi,
1) Upgrade firmware is always good idea

2)>>Should I look at a setting on the controller card itself, such as turning off write cache or something similar?

Do you sure your SmartArray 6i has write cache ? I think by default 6i doesn't have BBWC. Anyway, I think event 509 not related to read/write cache ratio

3) If you see these events only during Exchange IS maintenance (backup or online defragmentation, for example) it maybe normal situation
