Re: Expand RAID 5 with HP Smart Array P440ar Controller
ML350 gen9 p440AR , tried to add an additional 600Gb to a raid 5, same problem, only possible to add as spare, no expansion. Installed latest firmware from servicepack spp-2017.07.2-SPP2017072.2017_0922.6 .... same situation.
Found this for servers with esxi:

To Remove that drive from spare ,simply unselect that specific drive ...check the image below for your reference..

Re: Expand RAID 5 with HP Smart Array P440ar Controller
1. Update firmware RAID controler
2. Install the latest version of SSA for Windows
3. Ensure that you are starting the latest version of SSA cause the old version is staying. (or uninstall the old version before)
4. Enjoy expanding your RAID5

Re: Expand RAID 5 with HP Smart Array P440ar Controller
In my case I had the smart storage administrator open and the logical devices section highlighted down the side to view the arrays, disks and logical drives. When I switched the drop down "show" menu from Physical view to Logical view, I was able to select my logical volume and the extend button was then available. The extend button is not there if you have the physical view showing.
