Extend size of logical disk ??

Hello.

I have just expanded my Array with 8 new disk.
It is an Smart Array 5300 controller on Windows 2003 Server.

I now have the option of creating a new logical drive, or extend the existin logical drive.

What is the bst option ??

The new diskspace is going to be added to an existing partition in Windows.

How do I do this.

The existin partition is placed on a dynamic disk.

Can someone please help me...

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

hi

if you want to add more space to C:

you have to extend doing that you're going to get unused space next to C partition so using an partition utility to can add that space to C:

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

Hello.

I want to extend the D partition on my Windows Server.

The disk where the D partition is currently a Dynamic drive.
Let's see:
If I extend the size of the logical drive on the Array, it would appear as free space on the D drive.
Can't DiskManager in Windows include this free space into the existing D partition ??

This should be the same as creating a new logical drive, and add this logical drive to the exiting dynamic drive ??

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

You may have to use a third party partition manipulator such as Paragon or Acronis.

However, these are not the actual supported ways to resize the partition as per HP. If data back up and array reconfiguration (ACU) is possible, I would highly recommend that to manage your storage.

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

If you do a web search on "Smart Array Controller Technology: Drive Array Expansion and Extension" you should find an HP white paper that briefly discusses both options, though I think it refers to Windows 2000 Server instead of 2003 (it was written before the release of 2003). The recommended method is to create a new logical disk in the empty space and expand the Windows dynamic volume on to that.

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

Hello Trond,

If the D partition is extended with the ACU, you can use diskpart.exe (W2K3 included tool) to extend the D-partition also.
It is not nesseary to change to dynamic disk.

With regards,

Otto

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

Hello.

The disk is already dynamic.

Can I use the Extend Size in ACU or is it better to create a new logical drive and add this to the existing partition ??

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

go to windows CMD and type diskpart - maybe this utility may help you.

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

Hello.

Thanks to all that replyed to my questions. This is what worked:

The Array expansion up to 14 disk with 1 spare went fine.
Logical Disk extension up to 1,6 TB went fine.
Disk Manager in Windows shows the extra space as free space at the end of the Logical Disk.

Problem:
Since the logical disk was converted to dynamic disk in Windows 2000 and the server is upgraded to Windows 2003, Disk Manager can't expand the Volume.

Solution:
Stop the services that uses data on the disk.
Make a full backup of data on the drive.
Remove all volumes on the drive.
Convert the disk back to basic disk
Recreate partition to the full size of disk.
Restore all data onto this new partition.
Restart services that uses data on the disk.

Alot of work, but as far as I can see this is the only solution, since the logical disk was converted to dynamic disk in Windows 2000.

Re: Extend size of logical disk ??

Just so you know, you could have used the diskpart.exe utility that is built-in to Windows 2003 and XP, with Windows 2000 it's a download.
