Fan - absolutely necessary?

Hi
I have a proliant 330e next to me every time, and the noice made by the fan is killing me. Is it absolutely necessary or I may unplug it?
I'm not using this proliant as a server, and I turn it off every night, so...

Thanks!

I have windows 2000

I've installed recently management drivers but nothing happend.

And latest bios... nop, not installed. Should I?

Re: Fan - absolutely necessary?

Guido:

If you unplug the fan, the bios will shutdown your server with a POST Error 1611 - Fan not Present

Your server will not boot.

Here is the latest ROM:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17193.html

Here is the latest PSP:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/19613.html

The PSP includes all the drivers and agents you need. You need to be running the Health Drivers to have the fan speed reduced.

G'luck! -john
Enjoy!

Re: Fan - absolutely necessary?

ok, but actually I was wandering if unpluging the fan could be harmful to my machine.

Re: Fan - absolutely necessary?

Yes, if you could bypass the bios settings and let the system run without the cooling effect of air movement, your server inside would be an oven.
Enjoy!

Re: Fan - absolutely necessary?

May I ask one more question? I've now installed latest ROM and latest psp, but the fan is still running at maximum speed, and ofcourse making a loud noise. You've mentioned that health drivers should be inbstalled. How do I know if I got them running?

Thanks a lot!!
