Fan speed DL360
I have a brand new DL360, but there is a problem with the fan speed. It keeps on running in turbo mode, it never goes to 'normal' speed. Now it looks like I have an aiport with huge boeings in my server room!
I already checked the web and saw that the BIOS needed an upgrade, so I did that. After that I re-installed Windows 2003 Standard Server, but still the fans stay on maximum overdrive!
Anyone an idea how to solve this? (I also trie to install the HP management software, but no nice slow fans...)
Regards,
Dirk

Re: Fan speed DL360
1)Update the BIOS ( where as you have done that before )
2)Change the switch setting s3 to viceversa what it is in.
3) Install latest proliant support pack.
Then check is there any difference.

Re: Fan speed DL360
I updated the BIOS to the latest version, switch 3 is set to off (was ON) and I updated the management agents and installed Insight Manager again.
But still there is a Boeing lying on my desk here! Is it a good idea to totally re-install Windows 2003 Standard Server?
Hope to get an answer!

Re: Fan speed DL360
Reinstalling the os won't be a solution i suppose.
we have tried
# Read Customer Advisory EL030207_CW01, "Certain ProLiant DL360 G3 Servers Require System ROM Update And SW2 Maintenance Switch S3 Set To The OFF Position To Allow Control Of Fan Speed By The Health Driver," available at the following URL: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=PSD_EL030207_CW01
# Update the P31 System ROM to a version dated 28 January 2004 (01/28/2004) or later. The latest version is available from either of the following URLs:
Online ROM Flash Component for Windows - HP ProLiant DL360 G3 (P31) Servers :http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/6388.html
Systems ROMPaq Firmware Upgrade Diskette for HP ProLiant DL360 G3 (P31) Servers: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/7248.html
#
Ensure that the operating system specific System Management Controller Driver (Health Driver) a.k.a. ProLiant Server Health Driver, Server Management Driver, System Health Driver, or Health and Wellness Driver (depending on the operating system) is installed. The Health Driver providing support for the fan control on the ProLiant DL360 G3 server can be obtained from SmartStart Release 6.10 (or later). The operating system specific System Management Drivers can be downloaded from the Server Software and Drivers web site at the following URL:
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/index.html
# Ensure that the SW2 System Maintenance Switch S3 is set to the "OFF" position. Refer to Chapter 5, page 5-6 of the Maintenance and Service Guide for instructions on performing this step. The ProLiant DL360 G3 Server Maintenance and Service Guide is available at the following URL:
http://h200001.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/UCR/SupportManual/TPM_293948-4/TPM_293948-4.pdf
What we are left with to try
----------
# Order the Fan Cable Extension Kit (Spares Kit 361860-001). Spares Kit 361860-001 contains 70 fan cable extensions (enough for ten complete servers). Use the process below to order the Fan Cable Extension Kit:
Obtaining Service Inside North America
Contact Customer Support at 1-800-652-6672
OR
Contact an Authorized Service Provider (ASP)
Note: The fan cable extensions are available as a customer replaceable part and may be shipped directly to and installed by the customer. To take advantage of this program, inform the HP Customer Service Representative or the Authorized Service Provider when requesting the fan cable extensions.
Obtaining Service Outside North America
Contact an Authorized Service Provider (ASP) or the appropriate HP Customer Support Center to obtain the fan cable extensions. A list of Customer Support Centers and appropriate phone numbers is available at the following URL:
http://h10018.www1.hp.com/country/us/en/wwcontact.html
# Once Spares Kit 361860-001 has been received, install a fan cable extension to each Nidec fan in the server. On a server fully configured with Nidec fans, the server requires four fan cable extensions for the CPU fan assembly and three fan cable extensions for the power supply fan assembly. It is not necessary to install fan cable extensions on fans from other vendors; however, installation on these fans will not have an adverse effect. For information on installing the fan cable extensions, refer to the information below.

Re: Fan speed DL360
There are no Nidec fans in the server, so I do not need the cable replacement kit I guess, or do you also have to replace the cables with other fans? (I have a brand called Sunon)\
I also tried another smart-start CD, but the problem remains...
Is there anyone left with a solution and is it the problem if the server stays on turbo-speed all the time?

Dirk

Re: Fan speed DL360
I have the same problem with a DL360 G3 and Linux debian. No SN xx32xxxxxxx, no Nidec fan and with new RomPaq P31.
A 2nd DL360 G3 with debian works with nice slow fans.
I hope too!
