Fibre channel HBA for ProLiant servers

Hi guys,

Im having trouble getting a definitive list of HBAs to connect our ProLiant servers to our new SAN (through two Cisco fibre switches). Ive looked at the specs of all the HBAs but they are lacking the "supported servers" section so I dont know what HBAs are supported in any of my servers. I want the best available HBAs for the following servers (taking into account the smaller servers will not have enough slots free for two HBAs, but for the bigger servers I would prefer two single-bus HBAs for better redundancy)

- ML570G2 (two single-bus HBA's)
- ML570G1 (two single-bus HBA's)
- DL580G2 (two single-bus HBA's)
- DL380G4 (two single-bus HBA's)
- DL360G3 (one dual-bus HBA)
- DL360G4 (one dual-bus HBA)

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Jordan

Re: Fibre channel HBA for ProLiant servers

Thanks KOV,

These links are great, but it does not actually tell me what servers are supported by which cards. Can I just assume that if I get the right card for the bus type then HP would be happy with that? I know things like NICs are only supported on particular servers and just find it strange that it sounds like any HBA is fine for any server that will take it.

Re: Fibre channel HBA for ProLiant servers

Hi Jordan,

I will assume you have a Windows environment for the following details: -

Most of the HP Fibre Channel SAN approved cards for Windows environments are made by Emulex (LPXXX -Light Pulse models). HP sell these as FCAXXX models (Fibre Channel Adapter).

The servers in your list, with the exception of the ML570G1 support 64-bit 133Mhz PCI-X 3.3V cards (Note: most PCI-X slots run at 100Mhz). The ML570G1 supports 64-bit 66Mhz PCI cards.
For best throughput and redundancy results in the servers where you plan to install two cards, you should ideally install these in different PCI bus slots. The shared PCI bus allocation for each server is identified on the label within the top cover however to help you I have listed them in the order you have given them and attached the image to this reply.
(Use MS Paint to view it).

Suitable Cards (Windows Environment): -

2Gb Single Channel PCI 64-bit 66Mhz FCA2101 (Emulex LP952) HP Part 245299-B21
Suitable for ML570G1

2Gb Single Channel PCI-X 64-bit 133Mhz FCA2404 (Emulex LP9802) HP Part 305573-B21
Suitable for ML570G2, DL580G2,DL380G4 with PCI-X backplane.

2Gb Dual Channel PCI-X 64-bit 133Mhz FCA2404DC (Emulex LP9802DC) HP Part 323264-B21
Suitable for DL360G3 and DL360G4

These are probably the most popular FC cards used in Proliant servers althought there are a few other variants.

I hope this helps.

Brian
