Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

When I run the firmware maintenance 7.4 cd on my ML570 G1, it does the following:

- boots
- prints a message 'Initalizing devices, Do NOT REBOOT' ( or something similar )
- drops down to a prompt

Is this the expect behavior of it? Has all the firmware been updated or is the cd not burned correctly?

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

Keith, it is not expected behaviour, you have some problem. I saw similar problem with old Proliant 1600 servers
See this thread
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=967617

Expected behaviour: you will have GUI window with option to run ROM Update utility, when you run ROM update utility it will scan all your hardware and as result you will see window with all hardware items and their firmware versions. Then you can run firmware update.
Try to burn older version of firmware maintence CD, for example 7.10 version

Maybe it will help

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

Keith, actually you can update firmware without Firmware Maintenance CD.
Use this link for online BIOS update (you run it from Windows)

Use this link for online firmware update for SmartArray 5300 controller (run it from Windows as well)

Use this link for Offline fimware update for SCSI disks

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

I played around with the burned version of the 7.4 CD last night. Seems it boots up in Linux. It creates a 1GB ramdisk, mount the usr.iso under /usr, and then mounts something under /mnt/cdrom( I did not notice the actual device right off hand ). Under /mnt/cdrom is looks a 'standard' windows cdrom. Meaning there is a autorun file and other things that would hint it is a windows cd.

The question is, does the firmware boot linux to do its job?

Also, does anyone know when the older versions of the firmware cd will be reloaded onto

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

Keith,
Firmware maintenance CD 7.xx are Linux based. (SmartStart CD 7.xx too)
HP have some problems with ftp mirroring, so use this for download old Firmware maintenance CD:
ftp://161.114.23.171/pub/products/servers/supportsoftware/zip/firmware_maintenance-7.10-0.zip 7.10 version
ftp://161.114.23.171/pub/products/servers/supportsoftware/zip/firmware_maintenance-7.20-0.zip 7.20 version
ftp://161.114.23.171/pub/products/servers/supportsoftware/zip/firmware_maintenance-7.01-0.zip 7.01 version

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

Hmmm..... versions 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, and 7.4 all exhibit the same behavior. Has anyone burned a version that works? I am using xcdroast under linux to create the cd. Interestingly, SmartStart 5.5 was created the same way and works just fine........

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

SmartStart 5.5 is windows based.
7+ is Linux.
On old servers it can not work properly.

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

Why in the world would a linux based CD not work??!?! I have linux running on it perfectly fine. Since the firmware cd is bootable, why woul dit care what OS is loaded in the hard drive(s)?

Re: Firmware Maintenance 7.4 - Expected behavior

Keith, just update firmware without Firmware Maintenance CD (see my second response in this thread)
I did this for 11 old Proliant 1600 servers (see http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=967617), you will do it only for one server...
Maybe somebody from HP will have better suggestion.
