Re: First POST can be up to 10 minutes ....

First POST can be up to 10 minutes ....

Hello,
since 3 or 4 month, the first POST of a proliant server can be very long.

Sometimes, it can be up to 10 or 12 minutes.

During this time, the fans are running at 100%
there are no keyboard and no vid├йo.

When the proliant logo apears, the fans slow down and the system will show the memory installed, in black, on a withe screen.

after this step, the server will always start as fast as usual...

We are integrating CPU and memories on a dozen of proliant a day, this is _VERY_ time consuming.

is this behaviour correct ? I Hope there is a workaround ...

Beno├оt.

Hi,

Just one thing.
Clear the nvram then check.
second try removing SCSCI devices then check again difference in performance in booting.

Re: First POST can be up to 10 minutes ....

If you power a server up for the first time (out of the box) it may take a while for it to get video. On some models it may take almost 10 minutes, but this is usually the first time it's ever brought up, not everytime.

If you reboot or shutdown one of these servers does the problem happen again or is it only the first time?
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: First POST can be up to 10 minutes ....

You are right Ted, this behaviour occure only at the very first power-on of the server.

If I reboot the server, the boot is faster, there is not any more the "Bios memory diagnostic"

Re: First POST can be up to 10 minutes ....

I forgot to say this but, it is normal for this to occur when the server is brought up the first time.

... wait for up to ten minutes for the server to initiate POST and video. The delayed startup does not occur during any subsequent power up sequences and does not affect the performance or functionality of the server.

Re: First POST can be up to 10 minutes ....

Yesterday, we had:
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ53503AD
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ535029K
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ53503AF
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ535029R
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ535029L
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ53503AE
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ53103SG
ProLiant DL360 G4p GBJ53503AG

with basic configuration:
DIMM1 DDR Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns)
DIMM2 DDR Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns)
Proc1 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.40GHz
verry first Time to boot 1 minute (out of the box, Display the "Bios memory diagnostic" and says 2 x 1 GB DIMMS)
second time to boot 20 seconds

adding
DIMM3 DDR Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns)
DIMM4 DDR Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns)
Proc2 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.40GHz
Time to boot 1 minute (Display the "Bios memory diagnostic") and says 4 x 1 GB DIMMS, with 2 new DIMMS on slot 3 and 4
second time to boot 20 seconds
all new boot /reboot without memory change will take only 20 seconds.
after, we add the two SCSI disks.

One minute to test 2 GB of memory, this is the time to unpack the server, open it and add the memory banks.

We need 50 % more time to integrate our custommer's hardware configuration

For 8 or 12 Gb, this time is about 4 and 6 minutes ... lost for nothing ...

Re: First POST can be up to 10 minutes ....

Hi,

Check RBSU for following setting
-----------------------------------------
POST Speed Up
IMPORTANT: POST Speed Up applies only to 32-bit servers.
The POST Speed Up option is a simple toggle setting that enables or disables the extended power-up memory test. When POST Speed Up is set to Enabled, the extended power-up memory test is not executed, and the server powers up more quickly.
------------------------------------------
I think this will do
