GPU on a Proliant Gen7

Hello

I'm an student in informatique. I bought two years ago a DL380Gen7 with the advices of a teacher I had. I moved shool, abandon my project to turn the server into a workstation.

I recently came back to this, two years laters. And I'm now trying to put a GTX 1650 in it. I have the card, powered by a special cable hooked on the SAS power connector B, plug in a riser plugge in the second riser connector

(see the user guide : https://content.etilize.com/User-Manual/1046138544.pdf#%5B%7B%22num%22%3A535%2C%22gen%22%3A0%7D%2C%7B%22name%22%3A%22XYZ%22%7D%2C48%2C744%2C0%5D )

My issue here, is that when I install everything, nothing show up. The server start, apparently detect a GPU because the integrated graphic chipset doesn't work, but the GPU doesn't work either. Furthermore, the fan of the GPU doesn't spine.

I guess that could come from the power supplie, with is a 460W (so may be a bit short ?) but I'm a bit unsure on this. iLO 3 firmware is from 2015

I anyone could give me a tip before buying anything I would really appreciate it

Thanks in advance, have a good day

Re: GPU on a Proliant Gen7

Hi,

The referred GTX 1650 is not a supported card. Kindly refer to the quickspecs of the server:-

https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/getdocument.aspx?docname=c04199811

The modification is nt recommended and may or may not work.

Re: GPU on a Proliant Gen7

Hi,

You can check the option parts list of the server and it does not include an optional graphics card:-

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02755440

The options parts list shows all the components that this server can be upgraded with. This does not include a graphics card. Adding a graphics card has not been tested and not recommended by HPE for any modifications.

Re: GPU on a Proliant Gen7

Hello,

Hum, this is right. But in the meantime people across the internet have done it sucessfully, and I've done it myself with an other graphic card who does not require as much power.

https://community.hpe.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-ML-DL-SL/Proliant-DL380-g7-Graphic-Card/td-p/5294847

https://community.hpe.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-ML-DL-SL/DL380G7-and-150W-graphics-card-support/td-p/4734710

I'm fully awary of the fact thhat this is not a normal use of a server, and not recommended by the HP.  My question is if it's the power supply of the driver who may trouble here.

Thanks for your reply,

Best regards

Antoine

Re: GPU on a Proliant Gen7

from everything I've been able to find you need this board to get power for the GPU, and either the optional 750 or 1200 watt power supply

HP DL38X G5p/G6/G7 PCI-E x16 Riser Kit 494323-B21

The one thread you mentioned shows this information

Re: GPU on a Proliant Gen7

Hello,

Thanks for your reply! The GPU i'm using has a PCIe 6 cable, so that's why I was thinking that the riser I already have would be enought (it's the 496057-001) since it doesn't have to supply the card. (I may be wrong here I don't know! )

So for you upgrade my 460W power supply to 750/1200W is mandatory to makes it works ?

Thanks you very much!

Regards,

Antoine

Re: GPU on a Proliant Gen7

Does that riser have a x16 slot? I'm seeing conflicitng information, some boards I see look like they only have x4 and x8 slots.  If the card doesn't require external power, you might be OK with teh smaller power supply

Re: GPU on a Proliant Gen7

Hello
The riser do have a PCIex8 on one side and 2x4 on the other
The card has a x8, so can be equipped on the riser without any modification. Moreover, the card is powered by the SAS controller B power supply.

Here's the GPU inside the bay (I may modifie it to be a bit further of the heat sink)
