Hello,

I have a DL360 G4 and i want upgrade HDD and upgrade from Win 2000 server to Win 2003 server

I but i want be sure if i have a problem i can reboot olds disk with Win 2000

HDD are in RAID 1, so i am afraid to loose the hdd SCSI ID when i recompose the new logical unite.

have you a solution to conserve the possibility to reboot with old disks after use new disks and inversely

Thanks a lot

Re: HDD Scsi

Hello lunab,

1.Are you planning a fresh install of Win 2003 or literally upgrade from Win 2000 to Win 2003?
2.Incase its a fresh install(sounds like),what do you plan to do with the old disks?
3.Since this server has provision to install 2 disks, incase there is a problem, you can connect the old disks if you keep it in shelf provided you label the disks(disk 0 and disk1).

Re: HDD Scsi

Thanks for your answer

i make a new install of windows 2003 on 2 new disks (never used) in Raid 1

and i conserve the 2 old disks with Win 2000 for backup security

what do you think about this ?

Thanks

Re: HDD Scsi

Should be ok.
Make sure you label the old disks and incase of a failure(new disks) connect the old disks in the same order.

Re: HDD Scsi

excuse me but i wan sure to understand you

you say "...and incase of a failure(new disks) connect the old disks in the same order."

ok, but i believed when i make a new logical drive under scsi controler i loose the old ID SCSI disk drive ?

the DISK ID is writed on the disk or on the controler card ?

if i change the disk in the good position the controller card get the good logic unity ?

thanks

Re: HDD Scsi

Good question,

The array information is stored on the disks.
I guess you are using the smart array 6i controller.

Scenario 1:
>Use 2 new disks,configure array,install OS.
>The old disks with Win 2000 is in the shelf.

Scenario 2:
>New disk/array failure.
>Clear NVRAM in RBSU(optional i suppose).
>Power down the server and take out both the new disks.
>Connect the old disks in the same order and power on the server.
>After the smart array controller is detected during POST,it should show an existing logical volume(raid 1) and it should load the OS(Win 2k).

Hope this clarifies.

Re: HDD Scsi

Ok

i understand better

so i am in scenario 1

so after instal the OS on new disk, i understand that i can boot when i want with :

new disk in 2003

and if i want i put the olds disk in 2000

at the boot system the control card read on the 2 old disks and get the array

just need to careful the disk plug order

after if want too i can put the 2 new disks to work in 2003 again

isn'it ?

thanks for your patience

Re: HDD Scsi

Yes you are right.
Make sure whichever disk you re-connect it should be in the same order.

Hope i have addressed your queries.
