We are about to purchase 10 of DL140 part number 442993-425.
Can this server take non HP supplied SATA disks? We would like to put 2 500 GB hard disks in each server and can save a small fortune if we used non HP disks. Storage and reliability of data storage is not important to us and hence RAID or any other such techniques are of little use.
The servers will be primarily used for mathematical modelling work which is CPU+RAM intensive.
Regards,
Surat.

Re: HELP - DL140 purchase question.
Though not recommended; Considering the reason Y you need them, I would say Yes, they would work just fine.
:) Regards.

Re: HELP - DL140 purchase question.
from the product it that is dl140 G3 right?
if the server is a non hot plug model yes non hot plug HDD will work
check this
Serial-ATA (SATA) Non-Hot Plug Hard Drives (Non-Hot Plug Models Only)
80GB 1.5G SATA 7.2K NHP 3.5" HDD
383410-B21
HP 160GB 1.5G SATA 7.2K NHP 3.5" HDD
411275-B21
HP 250GB 1.5G SATA 7.2K NHP 3.5" HDD
411276-B21
NOTE: When purchasing systems with the 500GB Non-Hot Plug SATA drives, please reference the Configuration Information Section of this QuickSpecs to order via Configuration to Order.

Re: HELP - DL140 purchase question.
I think Surat was referring to the NON HP Disk - 3rd party; rather than hot plug/non-hot plug disks.
;-) Regards.

Re: HELP - DL140 purchase question.
Thank you very much for the prompt reply.
You do not "recommend" this and I would like to have a bit more understanding behind this.
The economics are as follows:
For 10 servers if we purchase 20 x 500 GB NON-HP SATA disks it would cost us around ├В┬г1400 (British Pounds) or $2800 (US Dollars).
For 10 servers if we purchase 20 x 500 GB HP Hot Swap disks it would cost us around ├В┬г3400 or $6800.
So by using NON-HP disks we can save around ├В┬г2000 or $4000. Enough to buy 3 additional servers.
BUT! If we are likely to run into any kind of problems I do not want to save this amount and would rather go for HP Hot Swap disks.
Expanding on this, do you think maybe we should put 1 HP Hot Swap disk, say 160 GB and the second disk a NON-HP SATA 500 GB disk. On the HP Hot Swap disk we can load the operating system and keep all data on the NON-HP SATA 500 GB disk.
Regards,
Surat.

Re: HELP - DL140 purchase question.
I did as search on the URL which you supplied and looked for 500. I saw the statement on the URL:
"Internal storage capacity of up to 1.5TB (2 x 750GB Hot Plug 3.5" SATA hard drives), 1 TB (2 x 500 Non-Hot Plug SATA hard drives) or 600GB (2 x 300GB Hot Plug 3.5" SAS hard drives)"
Does this apply to ALL DL140 - G3 servers OR do some servers support NON-HP SATA disks and some do not?
Following is the statement from the quote we received from the supplier today:
Server Hewlett Packard 442993-425 ProLiant DL140 G3 - Rack - 2-way - 1 x Quad-Core Xeon
E5335 / 2 GHz - RAM 2 GB - SAS - hot-swap 3.5" - HD: none -
CD-RW / DVD-ROM combo - Gigabit Ethernet - Monitor : none
- 1U
Thanking you for your reply.
Kind Regards,
Surat.

Re: HELP - DL140 purchase question.
Its not like you *will* run into problems if you use non HP disk.
Also,
Its not like you will *never* have any problems if you use HP Disk.
;-) Choice is yours.
Ofcourse, there are initial issues on getting the OS installed on SATA Drives on 100 series servers; But, Once past this, I think any HDD will be ok. & Also keeping in mind that ur need is more CPU+RAM hungry than HDD.
Regards.
