HP 5si Raid Controller

I am at a customer site and they want their original single HD mirrored. They have purchased the new HD and the only way I can see to get it installed is to go into the SCSI Manager and delete the original Logical drive and then recreate the mirrored set. If I delete the original logical drive will that lose the boot volume and data on that drive? Or can I delete the logical drive then recreate the mirrored set and the original data on theat drive will be intact.

Re: HP 5si Raid Controller

Hello Greg,

1.Is it the smart array 5i controller?
2.Whats the size of the original disk and the size of the new disk?
3.What was the initial raid level?
4.Are you referring to Array Configuration Utility when you say SCSI Manager?

Don't think of deleting existing volumes,it could be disastrous.

Re: HP 5si Raid Controller

Hello SRH,

1.Is it the smart array 5i controller?
Yes

2.Whats the size of the original disk and the size of the new disk?
36 Gigs partitioned as C with 11.2 gig and E with 22.19 gig.

3.What was the initial raid level?
0

4.Are you referring to Array Configuration Utility when you say SCSI Manager?
Yes

Don't think of deleting existing volumes,it could be disastrous.

Yes I found this out by creating a logical drive on the drive I installed to be the mirrored drive and tested it by trying to delete and it stated that by deleting this drive you will destroy the data.

So I guess I answered my own question.
Thanks

2.Whats the size of the original disk and the size of the new disk?

I mean are you using 2 physical disks to implement mirroring(Raid 1)?
If yes,if the existing disk is 36Gb, is the new disk the same size?

Re: HP 5si Raid Controller

Sorry I misunderstood. Yes both physical disks are the same size, 36 gigs.

Re: HP 5si Raid Controller

SRH,

I installed ACU on the server and was able to expand the array and add the second drive to the 1st logical drive. Now that the physical drive is being added to the logical drive, is that all I need to do to get the RAID 1 or do I now wait for the drive to be added and then change the RAID level?

Thanks

Re: HP 5si Raid Controller

Select the existing logical volume and migrate the raid level and you are done.
