Hi All,
I'm about to perform the firmware update on both components HDD and its Array controller.
Controller firmware: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=374791&prodNameId=266591&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-d87d2adda05644759b52957753
HDD firmware:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=374791&swItem=MTX-b40ec573bdc64df0a805fb95b9&mode=4&idx=1
Is it ok if I do this?
1. Remove / unplug the hard drive from the HP DL 380 G3 server
2. Upgrade the controller firmware
3. Shutdown
4. Plug the hard disk in again
What's the risk and how to mitigate it ?
Thanks.

Solution
If you use this method ALL hard drives need to be pulled out. Is there a specific reason you are looking to do it this way? If you leave the hard drives in the server attached to the controller while flashing there should also not be a problem.
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: [HP DL 380 G3]: Updating the HDD and Array controller firmware ?
I've always done this operation booting from the firmware CD or DVD without need to unplug the disks. No problems.
But before doing it, I always make sure I have a good backup. That's the best way to mitigate the risk, AFAIK.

Re: [HP DL 380 G3]: Updating the HDD and Array controller firmware ?
Hi,
I cannot backup this serve as this is my Backup Server by itself :-)
the disk size is approx. 6 TB and I couldn't afford to lose the data in it.
