HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
Good Afternoon
We have a HP G8 running Xenserver 6.1 for citrix, I’m trying to update our Raid controller P420i from 3.42 to 3.54.
When i press F10 to access the intelligent provisioning services the software loads and finds a list of updates, I click continue it checks the servers hardware. I can then select the updates to install and click next to review them and click install, as soon as I click install a box pops up with a red cross and no text.
I then downloaded the Smart Firmware DVD extracted the ISO added my firmware update into the packages folder and rebuilt the ISO and booted to it through the ILO and again received an error.
I have attached screenshots.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Re: HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
I have updated the Intelligent provisioning services software to 1.40 and the firmware updates now work correctly, however it doesn’t find the latest firmware for my raid controller P420i, the current firmware is 3.42 and the latest is 3.54.
Why doesn’t it find the latest update?
Thanks,

Re: HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
Update
I have created a bottable USB using the HP USB tool and added the firmware into the swpackages folder, attached the USB to the ILO rebooted the server pressed F11 and selected one time boot from USB, it starts to boot and all looks fine and then i get something similar to the below
Loading vmlinuz-rhel6i386...............................
......
Loading initrd.img-rhel6i386............................
......
Ready.
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... _
Its hangs with the EDD message and the server needs rebooting.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

Re: HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
Hi mo3ph8us
Thanks for your response.
I have tried updating via USB,DVD and also through the Intelligent services to no avail.
The problem i have is the firmware update is not included within the standard Smart update DVD and i need to add it into the swpackages folder.
Please see my earlier message regarding edd=off problem.
Thanks,

Re: HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
Hi Daniel,
please note that the Smart Start DVD is not recommended for Gen8 Servers.
To update the a Gen8 Server please use the SPP (Support Pack for Proliant)
Download the SPP from www.hp.com/go/spp
Open the the download and search for hpsum.exe or something like this.
You can execute this tool on you client. You can choose a source regarding the HP FTP and
a destination, for example the server IP.
After that HP SUM will check the installed FW and if the ftp has somthing new.
It is a easy tool to make the server up to date.
Greetings
Marcus

Re: HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
As mentioned in my original post the server has Citrix XenServer installed and not windows so I can't just download a .exe and run it.
My only option to get the raid controller is to download the smart update DVD and modify the firmware included and then either put it on a USB or mount the ISO.
As previously mentioned when i boot from USB all seems well into I get the edd=off problem.
Thanks,

What version???
You should use SPP02.2013.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
Yes thats the one I used, the latest one from February 2013.
But the firmware update wasn't released to the end of May 2013 and therefore is not included on the DVD.
That’s why I used the HP USB utility to put the ISO onto a USB stick and then added the package into the swpackages folder.
The server then boots from the stick but gets stuck on the edd=off message.
Thanks,

Re: HP DL Gen Firmware Update Problems
I have the same problem on Proliant 360p Gen8. It (intelligent provisioning services) says that all firmware is up to date, but this is not true. Probably I'll also try SPP, but just don't understand, why HP marketed this option, if it doesn't work ??
