HP DL380 G3 Motherboard will a G4 M/Board 359251-001

Hello
I have a couple of old HP DL380 G3 and also have 2 G4 motherboards 359251-001 and was wondering if these would fit inside of the G3 case, with most of the same parts, the only difference I can see if that the G3 has 5i SmartArray whereas the G4 has a 6i.

One of the G3's are just base systems with 12Gb of RAM, and a pair of Intel® 3.20-GHz Xeon 1-MB L3 cache, would these also be compatible with the G4 motherboard.

Hi Michael,
I have the same question. Were you ever able to determine if you could put a G4 motherboard in a G3 chassis?

Hello

After some discussion with HP collegues I have managed to get it working, just different CPU's, memory and smartcache.

Re: HP DL380 G3 Motherboard will a G4 M/Board 359251-001

Hi Mike,
There are some G4 motherboards with CPU(s), voltage regulators, heat sync(s), etc. I am thinking of bidding on one to replace the guts of my G3. Are there any tricks I should know before I decide to spend $ on the G4 board? I take it that the physical mounting is all identical?

Thanks!

Hello

No tricks at all, everything else fits board is just a drop in and secure, as long as anything that is attached to m/board is replaced all works pretty good, I have had no problems.

The fans and fan housing from the G3 fits the G4 with no problems same fans.

Re: HP DL380 G3 Motherboard will a G4 M/Board 359251-001

Mike,
Just for future reference I found a couple issues that differ from your experience. There may be differences in the G3s over the life of the line. I purchased a DL380 G4 MB with CPUs, VRs, etc from e-bay. I tried to replace the MB in my DL380 G3. The G4 MB is just slightly wider so it didn't want to sit down in the G3 chassis. I also noticed the power connector on the G3 MB uses 22 pins rather than 24 so to plug in the G3 chassis is 22 pin while the G4 MB wants a 24 pin power plug.

I take it that your G3 chassis readily accepted the G4 MB with none of these issues? Does your G3 chassis have a 24 pin or 22 pin power connector?

Hello

Could be I had the 3.2Ghz version of the G which does have the correct power connector.
