HP DL380 G5 & RHEL5 bonding issue

I'm trying to configure ethernet bonding for a DL380 G5 server. I managed to get the bond0 interface to work with eth0 and eth1 as slaves. However, eth0 can't detect when the link is down. It is always "up" regardless or whether or not the cable is plugged or unplugged.
eth1 seems to be working properly though, thus i'm assuming there's nothing wrong with the hardware, and it supports bonding.
So, any ideas what seems to be the problem? and anyone using the same server has experienced and solved this issue?

Here's a print of the /proc/net/bonding/bond0 file:
