HP DL760 G2 - Operating System

Hello,

I have an: HP DL760 8way 2.8GHZ HT server

Replacing an older proliant...

Basically i need an answer relating to the OS and the use of the CPU's HT.

Will Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 recognise that that the 8x installed xeon cpus are HT.

If i opened up task manager for eg will it show that there are 16 CPU's pumping away?

(one physical processor looks like
two logical processors to the operating system)

The same question as above but using:
suse linux enterprise server 10?

I want an OS that recognises that the installed cpu's are HT so that i can execute 16 separate tasks (or code streams called threads)?

I hope the above will make some sort of sense many thanks in advance.I do award points for help...
Kind Regards,

John

Hi John,

I am little bit confuse Ur question, BTW what I have understand U need see the 16 processor in OS mode because Ur system has 8 processorâ s and each processor is HT technologic.

U just reboot Ur system then press F8 go for system BIOS level then check which portion CPU information check it the check HT on/off then U just click on.

Check this way.

Re: HP DL760 G2 - Operating System

Hello ,

Thanks for your reply.

If i installed Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 on the DL760G2 8way server.

When i click on:
Task Manager->performance tab.
(without HT enabled in the bios)

It shows that there are indeed the 8x CPU's that are installed ..Great !

** Now **

If i enabled the HT function in bios.
Restart/boot the system

When i open up task manager and click on:
Task Manager->performance tab.

Will it show 16 CPU's ?

Does Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 support:

8x HT cpus?
(8x physical processor looks like 16x logical processors to the operating system)

Kind Regards,

John

Hi,

>>> Does Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 support:

John:

You're getting bad advice. Yes, WS03 EE will in fact show you 16 logical processors. I have one in my lab with that OS and it's been working for several years.

David is right

this document basically says which OS are supported - all W2003 Versions -

â ¢ All versions of Windows 2000
â ¢ All 32-bit versions of Windows XP and the Windows Server 2003 family

Re: HP DL760 G2 - Operating System

Hello,

Thanks: Claypool & Karlo

-For your comments with regard to the above questions...

I wanted to make sure as i have:

Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 and i didn't want to open/register if it wasn't suitable.

The server is only used for scientfic data crunching and the ammount of threads is more important than actual processing power.

Although having said that...i would love to have better !

If windows 2003 R2 Enterprise will show in task manager that there are 16 cpu's so to speak pumping away than thats brill....

To me.. it means i can run 16x instances at the same timen ( 1x per logical core)

I almost put another dent in my credit card !

Kind Regards,

John
