HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

My NIC card keeps disconnecting each morning, right around 7am, when everyone arrives and starts to sign in. I get this error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NIC Agents
Event Category: Service
Event ID: 1285
Date: 3/5/2008
Time: 6:59:32 AM
User: N/A
Computer: POS-FILE
Description:

Event Category: None
Event ID: 4
Date: 3/5/2008
Time: 6:59:09 AM
User: N/A
Computer: POS-FILE

Description:
HP NC7761 Gigabit Server Adapter: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected.

0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

It connects a moment or two later but it's causing issues. The NIC appears to be operating normally in the HP System Management Homepage.

I'm getting this error just before the disconnect but I'm not sure if it is related:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: BROWSER
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8032
Date: 3/5/2008
Time: 5:16:47 AM
User: N/A
Computer: POS-FILE
Description:
The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{794FA32C-F95E-4EC2-AD2B-0FDFE138F8D8}. The backup browser is stopping.

I get the browser error every few hours and can't figure out how to fix it. I have another server POS-SBS and that server is the master browser.

Any ideas on how to fix the NIC issue and keep the server online 24/7?

Thanks.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

I'd start with the basics..
Uninstall the NIC from the Windows device manager. Then install the latest NIC driver.

Replace your cable between your server and switch.

Try another port on your switch. Do you have a quality switch? If it's managed, update its firmware.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

I should have mentioned im my original post that I'd tried to swap out the CAT-5 wires over the weekend and I'd moved the two servers to different switches.

I have three switches:

Cisco Linksys SRW2048
3Com 3C16486
Netgear FSM7505

The File server is on the Netgear and the Mail server is on the Linksys.

I did notice that the mail server and file server are both disconnecitng from the network at exactly the same moment in the morning.

File Mail
6:41:03 6:41:03 Both go down
6:41:29 6:41:34 UP
6:41:32 6:41:49 DOWN
6:41:34 6:41:52 UP

My firmware on all the switches is up to date and no one else connected to those switches are having any issues.

I've updated the NIC drivers on both servers from 10.42.0.0 to 10.62.1.1, both already had the latest firmware.

Any other suggestions as yo what I can try?

Thanks.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

Both Servers are ProLiant ML350 G4p servers running Windows Server 2003.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

I am not using NIC teaming, I went ahead and upgraded the Network Configuration Utility anyway from 8.80.0.0 to 9.0.0.0.

Any other ideas what may be causing this issue?

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

When you say right around 7am, just how "reliable" is that - is it each day down to the minute? Down to the second? Does it happen on weekends?

Do any other systems see the same thing? Clients?

It happens anywhere between 6:30am and 7:50am. It does not occur on weekends. No one else is complaining of any issues.
