HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

My NIC card keeps disconnecting each morning, right around 7am, when everyone arrives and starts to sign in. I get this error:

Event Type: Error

It connects a moment or two later but it's causing issues. The NIC appears to be operating normally in the HP System Management Homepage.

I'm getting this error just before the disconnect but I'm not sure if it is related:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: BROWSER
Event Category: None

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{794FA32C-F95E-4EC2-AD2B-0FDFE138F8D8}. The backup browser is stopping.

I get the browser error every few hours and can't figure out how to fix it. I have another server POS-SBS and that server is the master browser.

Any ideas on how to fix the NIC issue and keep the server online 24/7?

Thanks.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

I'd start with the basics..
Uninstall the NIC from the Windows device manager. Then install the latest NIC driver.

Replace your cable between your server and switch.

Try another port on your switch. Do you have a quality switch? If it's managed, update its firmware.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

I should have mentioned im my original post that I'd tried to swap out the CAT-5 wires over the weekend and I'd moved the two servers to different switches.

I have three switches:

Cisco Linksys SRW2048
3Com 3C16486
Netgear FSM7505

The File server is on the Netgear and the Mail server is on the Linksys.

I did notice that the mail server and file server are both disconnecitng from the network at exactly the same moment in the morning.

File Mail
6:41:03 6:41:03 Both go down
6:41:29 6:41:34 UP
6:41:32 6:41:49 DOWN
6:41:34 6:41:52 UP

My firmware on all the switches is up to date and no one else connected to those switches are having any issues.

I've updated the NIC drivers on both servers from 10.42.0.0 to 10.62.1.1, both already had the latest firmware.

Any other suggestions as yo what I can try?

Thanks.

hi also check this

I forgot to ask you if you are using NIC Teaming

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

Both Servers are ProLiant ML350 G4p servers running Windows Server 2003.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

I am not using NIC teaming, I went ahead and upgraded the Network Configuration Utility anyway from 8.80.0.0 to 9.0.0.0.

Any other ideas what may be causing this issue?

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

When you say right around 7am, just how "reliable" is that - is it each day down to the minute? Down to the second? Does it happen on weekends?

Do any other systems see the same thing? Clients?

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

It happens anywhere between 6:30am and 7:50am. It does not occur on weekends. No one else is complaining of any issues.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

How many people have physical access to the switch(es) and/or NICs in the servers?

If it were part of a regularly scheduled thing in a server or switch I'd expect a much tigher time range.

I wouldn't _expect_ spanning tree to cause a link to show down, but am wondering if perhaps there is someone who arrives each day in that timeframe who say powers-up a switch or something?

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

There are no other switches besides those in the locked network closet. No one has access besides me. There are two or three people who come in that early, one has been here every time the network has blimped off. She says it happened the last time about 20 minutes after she arrived when she was printing documents. She uses two printers and she prints to them and they wake up from being on "sleep" mode. She did not come in early this morning but she did print to the same two computers and they were fine and the network did not blip off.

No other switches on the network besides the three in the network room.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

Looks like there was a gap longer than a weekend in that series of entries you posted. Anything "special" about that timeframe?

It may come down to starting to packet trace during the timeframe in question.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

Nothing special I can think of, and it did not happen this morning.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

Three different brands of switches never makes things easy.

If only one person is usually in that early, you could try..

Ensuring the servers and that person are on one switch. I would probably suggest the Linksys would be the better of them.

Disconnect your uplink cable. Have someone manually plug it in at the time people all start working.

See if you experience any issues at this point, and you can rule out the 3Com and Netgears.

Whilst doing this, I would also check the firmware on the Linksys and check what logging options it has.

I ran a diagnostic on the card and the server locked up. I rebooted and ran the diagnostic again and it came out fine.

Now I'm even more confused.

Re: HP NC7761 NIC card disconnecting for no reason

I am experiencing the same problem with a NIC card on Proliant ML350 G4p.It seems to happen late at night and early morning according to event viewer logs.
So far we have done the following with the help of HP Support.
1. Updated firmware for both BIOS and Network
2. Updated drivers
3. Removed the second Processor and PPM to see whether this has an effect.
I will update ehat happens next as problem bot yet resolved.
