HP PL DL180 G6, backplane, P420, SATA3

Hi,
We have a DL180 G6 with three 850 1 TB EVO disks and p212 controller (we are using the Adapter Tray from 3.5 to 2.5)
The current speed is kind of slow, and ACU shows that the drives are connected via 3Gb/s link

As the P420 is SSD optimized and a much faster card it should improve the speeds
The question is those the card support the SATA 6Gb/s speed and those the backplane affect it (as I understand it's just a pass-through)

Depending on which backplane you have. the sas-expander ones may not handle 6gbp/s but the straight through models will handle 6gbps.

Although unsupported, I do run a P420 on a dl180 G6 using ESXi very succesfully. Heat issues are primarily why the p420 is not good to use in unsupported servers! I think that is why they came out with the P430 to address

So we bought the controller and... The expander is limiting it to 3gbps

I think we will just buy a micro server and stuff it in

Hello @ArnoldMo

For a MicroServer, I recommend looking at the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 series, which has Smart Array B120i storage controller that supports up to 6Gb/s SATA drive.   When you click on the link above, I would then click on the “Select a Model” tab to see the models that are available.

Another option is I am happy to connect you to an HP Server specialist, which can go over server options and configurations that will meet your business needs.  Please let me know if this is a direction you would like to go.

Be sure to read the Microserver Gen8 Quickspecs, ports 1 and 2 are 6Gb/s, ports 3 and 4 or only 3Gb/s
