HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 748301-S01

I am looking to get HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 748301-S01, however I would like to also get extra RAM. http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/MiddleFrame.asp?page=config&ProductLineId=431&FamilyId=2548&BaseId=43012&oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID= indicates that "HP 32GB (2) 16GB 2Rx4 PC3-14900R-13 Memory " is installed, but then recommends  672631-B21  HP 16GB (1x16GB) Dual Rank x4 PC3-12800R (DDR3-1600) Reg CAS-11 Memory Kit  [Add $355.00]  as the part number for extra 16 gb sticks. This doesnt make sense. Can someone please help me with which RAM sticks I should get? I want 128 gb, but whatever combination optimizes performance - I can take less than 128 gb

The fastest speed that server can support are the 1866 speed and that's what comes with that model, so you'll want to stick with 1866 modules. Otherwise it'll knock down to 1600 MHz.

If speed is your ultimate goal, I'd go with having 2 x 1866 MHz DIMMs per channel so that it runs at the top speed *and* uses memory interleaving.

If you add a 3rd DIMM per channel though, the speed will drop down, so be aware of that.

You'll want more of these: 708641-B21
They're 16GB RDIMMs, 1866 Mhz (PC3-14900R).

If you wanted the ultimate speed and wanted to stick with your 2 existing modules, then you'll want 16 of those modules total (your 2, plus 14 more). That'll give you 256 GB of RAM.

If you wanted to save some money, save your existing 2 modules for something else and get 16 x 8GB modules: 731761-B21 (single rank) or 708639-B21 (dual rank) which will be 128GB.

You're maxed out at that point though, with 16 x 8GB modules. Adding a 3rd drops you to 1333MHz, and to get more memory you'd have to replace all those modules.

If it were me, I'd start out with 8 x 16GB modules, so you only need to get 6 more. You won't have the benefit of memory interleaving, but if mem size or overall mem speed becomes an issue, that's the time to add the other 8 x 16GB modules.

Just another note, I'm pretty sure HP only lets you run at 1866MHz with 2 DIMMs per channel if you're using official HP memory, not any 3rd party modules.

I agree to start out with the 16 x 8GB modules: 731761-B21 (single rank) or 708639-B21 (dual rank), which is an excellent start and still leaves room for adding more memory if needed.

Thank you for your message. My server finally arrived, and the RAM part numbers were 712383-081 and spare part 715274-001, with 3rd party part # mt36jsf2g72pz-1g9e1hf. I cannot find the part 708641-B21 on the RAM sticks. Also, I cant find a Canadian supplier for the part numbers indicated on the RAM. Please confirm that I should be ordering 708641-B21

708641-B21 is the correct part # for spare part #712383-081

HP parts have different part #'s on them for the spare part #, part #, etc.  If you're ever in doubt, just Google it.  People who sell HP memory will often list all of the different part #'s.

The -Bxx or -Sxx part #'s are the original equipment you'd order separately from the system itself.  If you're ordering replacement parts, the spare part # can be used.  The 3rd number you mentioned is the actual product number or something like that.

And then depending on where HP got the memory from, it will have the manufacturer sticker too, but you can ignore that since that's just what the mfg put on.  It might help identify the details of the RAM module like DDR2, DDR3, speed, capacity, etc. but just stick with the HP #'s for ordering.
