HP Proliant DL180 G6 - partition problems

Hi all,
need some help.
Got a new server, and I'm having some problems with a big chunk of disk space that won't allow me to create a simple spanned volume.
I have 4 x 2TB HDD, using RAID5.
I've been able to get the OS finally installed, but when I go into disk management it tells me I have a primary partition of 100Gb for system files etc, then a 1.9TB simple spanned volume (E) then next to it is a big chunk of data 3.9GB of unused space.
When I right hand click on it, I can't promote it as a simple volume, all the options are greyed out.
What's going on?! :(
I ran partition manager and it told me that I already had 4 primary partitions already created on the logical disks....now I'm proper confused.

I'm using Windows 2008R2 x64 bit.

I tried going into the Orca of the RAID array and removing the physical partitions and it had told me that it had done this, then I used the HP Easy cd setup and I created the raid5 again, with a 100Gb parition and left the rest of the 5TB of data to go on to the E drive, but upon installing the OS for a second time, I was faced with the same problem.

Utterly confused now.

Does anybody out there know where I'm going wrong, or what needs to be done to get all the available space back?

Many thanks in advance.

Stevie

Hey, what if you right-click on the disk (furthest to the left in disk manager in Windows) - sometimes you get options in there like - dynamic disk or gpt.

Hello mate,
Have you really got the same problem? Well, I'm guessing you do otherwise you wouldn't have posted.
I'm absolutely stumped as to what is going on.
The only thing I can think of is rebuilding the RAID and the server from scratch again, but I did that the last time and the same thing happened.
It's as if their is a chunk of the disk space that can't be allocated for some reason.
Has anyone out there got any suggestions as to what to do?
Thanks

Hello mate,
If you could let me know how you get on, that would be great, my server is also out of the box, new.
I'm going to rebuild from scratch also.
I will keep you posted.
Thanks

Re: HP Proliant DL180 G6 - partition problems

GPT partitioning is the solution.
MBR only allows a max of 2TB per partition.
If you use GPT, you can create upto 256TB of partitions.

You live and learn.
