Re: HP Proliant DL380 G4

Hi Darek,

Please check if the dimm installed have a part number 375004-B21 and are HP Dimms

Ideally the server should boot with the dimms installed in slots 3 and 4 i.e bank B.

Also let us know how many processors are installed,
What error msg. do u receive when u say the server cannot start.
Check the bios system rom version and date.
Also try to power on the server with only 2 x 4GB Dimms installed..

Keep us updated ..

All d best.

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G4

1- What if you put the old dimms back in?
2- Teste both dimms in another server to see if they are OK
3- Slots should be populated starting with Bank A ( slots 1 and 2 ) NOT B...

The DL380 G4 only supports the PC2-3200 Registered DDR-2 SDRAM DIMMs, 1.8 volts, 72 bits wide, and ECC. It continues to support online spare memory configurations.

Other guidelines for standard (not online spare) memory configurations include:
Populate slots 1 and 2, Bank A first
Always install memory in pairs of two identical DIMMs.
Install DIMMs with the same speed.
Install DIMMs into both slots within a single bank.
Install DIMMs in order. Upgrade memory by installing DIMM pairs into banks in sequential bank order, starting with bank B. <- When upgrading....

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G4

But, is DL380 working with 4GB RAM in one DIM bank. I can not find if the server can have 2 x 4GB RAM
I saw in the user manual that 2 GB DIMM is supported ... but 4 GB in one bank - there is no information about it. Could it be a problem?

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G4

it is supported..

This was taken from that server's spare part page:

Memory
36 DIMM, 512 MB, registered DDR2 SDRAM* 343055-B21 359241-001
RoHS - 413384-001 Yes
37 DIMM, 1 GB, registered DDR2 SDRAM* 343056-B21 359242-001 Yes
38 DIMM, 2 GB, registered DDR2 SDRAM* 343057-B21 359243-001
RoHS - 413386-001 Yes
39 DIMM, 2 GB, registered DDR2 Dual-Rank SDRAM* 345114-851 378021-001
RoHS- 413387-001 Yes
40 DIMM, 4 GB, registered DDR2 SDRAM* 345115-861 379984-001
RoHS - 413388-001

It cannot work with a single dimm, only pairs.. starting at bank A slot 1 and 2

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G4

also, you can find it is compatible on the Quickspecs..

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12028_div/12028_div.HTML#Options

go to options and to the memory section..

As I said, is it working fine when you place the old 2GB dimms on it?

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G4

my apologies, it doesnt support 4GB dimms..

All specas are for the memory Kits so the 4GB kit has 2 x 2GB dimms.. also from the quickspecs.. ( memory section )

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G4

Dear All :-)

Thank you all for help. I've found the right solution.

1. Yes, it's possible to install 2x4GB DIMM RAM. I just needed to do the BIOS update from heare: http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/24647.html

Server now see 10 GB RAM and have still two empty DIMM slots (very nice for the future).

2. Now the problem is that I have installed Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition - which doesn't support more then 4GB of RAM. I set up in BOOT.ini file /PAE switch. But it only allows to see 4GB (without /PAE I hade 3.5 GB)

3. I will need to upgrade my Windows to Enterprise or Longhorn edition (at least someone knows what to do in Standard Win 2003 edition) :)
