HP Proliant DL380 G7 and G8 memory and ssd upgrade

Hello Everyone

We have Some HP Proliant DL380 G7 and Gen8 Servers that we want to upgrade the memory and CPU also add an SSD disk to each one. here's our configuration

Model         CPU                        Freq        Cores     Memery per Slot  Total Memory
G7               1xE5620              2.4            4                  8,4,4                          ( 16 Go )
G8               1xE5-2609         2.4            4                   8,8                             ( 16 Go )
G8               1xE5-2609         2.4            4                   8,8                             ( 16 Go )
G8               2xE5-2630 V2  2.6             4                   8,8                             ( 16 Go )
G7               2xE55620          2.4             4                   4,4,4                          ( 12 Go )

the question is wich memory type to choose to suit our current config and we want to reach 32 Go or 64 Go on each server . how many Ram per remaining Slot we can add . what do you guys suggest ?

also wich SSD Disk Type Will fit for those servers ,  we want to add 64 Go SSD Disk Drive ,

will this SSD Drive Work Without Adding any Controller To support it ?

also We want to Double The Cpu on the servers that have only One CPU . will we add the same CPU or we can Add another Type ? .

And thanks for your Help

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G7 and G8 memory and ssd upgrade

https://memoryconfigurator.hpe.com/ddr4memoryconfig/home/legal -> tells you best memory layout configuration for G7/gen8

the quickspecs will list the best SSD which are compatible with your generation of server. G7 use standard carrier, gen8/9 use smart-carrier - they do not interchange!

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G7 and G8 memory and ssd upgrade

I don't know about everything else, but I wanted to say that when you're upgrading a system to add a 2nd CPU, HP strongly recommends that you have CPU's with the same stepping.  The BIOS on the system provides certain CPU microcode updates, and if your CPU's have different steppings it can cause some weird problems.

If you have systems you purchased at the same time, they might have the same stepping on the CPU's so you might combine those CPU's onto one system, and install 2 new ones on the other.  That's worked for me in the past.

Otherwise you could use this as an opportunity to get 2 faster CPU's (or with more cores), to ensure they have the same stepping.

As for the drives and memory, just use the part #'s and recommendations from the quickspecs pages for each server and you should be fine.  For memory, pay attention to how many ranks you have in each channel (on the G7 servers). For example, if you use quad-rank DIMMs you can only install 2 per channel.  2 dimms-per-channel works better for performance anyway so I'd recommend that.  Going to 3 DPC means you're throttling memory to 800 MHz.

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G7 and G8 memory and ssd upgrade

Hello @coolirc

For the HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 series the HP 8GB (1x8GB) Single Rank x4 PC3-14900R (DDR3-1866) (731761-B21), the Intel Xeon E5-2609 (662252-B21), and the HP 100-GB 6G 2.5 SATA SSD (691862-B21) are all compatible with the HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 and are available for purchase directly through the HP Small and Medium Business web site.

The HP 8GB (1x8GB) Dual Rank x4 PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) Registered CAS-9 Memory Kit is compatible HP ProLiant DL380 Gen7 server and is available directly through HP.  The HP DL380 G7 INTEL XEON E5620 2.40GHZ CPU KIT (587476-B21) is compatible with the HP ProLiant Gen7 server but is not available directly through HP but should be available through local or online vendors.

According to page 25 and 26 of the HP ProLiant DL380 Gen7 QucikSpecs the part number for the SSD you provided are not compatible, however there are several part numbers on page 25 and 26 that are compatible, unfortunately, none of them are available directly through HP.

I hope this information is helpful to you, please let me know if there is anything else I may be able to help you with.
