HP Proliant ML150 G6 CPU upgrade options

Dear all,

I have a HP Proliant ML150 G6 that I use as a CAD workstation and I would like to upgrade the CPUs. The motherboard contains the Intel 5500 chipset that officially supports the Nehalem-EP Xeon CPUs. In the case with Intel Server Boards based on the 5500 chipset, a BIOS upgrade added support for the Westmere-EP Xeon CPUs. The latest BIOS update available from the HP support site (dating back to 2011) mentions the following:

"Added support for latest E5502, E5504, E5506, E5520, E5530 and E5550 Intel Xeon processors."

Which sounds a bit strange to be, because my machine already came equipped with a E5504 from factory. Besides that, according to the Intel website, the Xeon E5550 doesn't even exist. So my question is, has anybody tried Westmere-EP CPUs (Xeon E56xx, L56xx or X56xx) in their Proliant ML150 G6 and got it to work? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Dennis Huiberts

Hi,

Refer to the QuickSpecs to know which part is compatible with the server.

The information in the BIOS update "Added support for latest E5502, E5504, E5506, E5520, E5530 and E5550 Intel Xeon processors." it depends on the server manufacturing year or date.

My guess, for example for system boards initially released did not have support for these processors but later system boards came preconfigured with these processors and hence the BIOS update would be for older system boards.

Re: HP Proliant ML150 G6 CPU upgrade options

If the system board is not original, it will support all 5600 series cpu's. not easy to tell other than to put a x5650 or so in it and if it works with all 5600 specific functionality- then your chipset supports 5600 series cpu's.

OTherwise it will behave like a 5500 series cpu with the older chipset!
