HP Proliant ML350 G5 RAID 1 not recognized by HP Start Smart or Windows

I have an HP Proliant ML350 G5 with two 500GB, set in Raid 1.  The second drive is supposed to mirror the first, which it looks like it does.  But I can't get the HP Start Smart program to recognize them, nor a Windows install.  To both programs, they do not think a logical drive exists.  I even deleted the drives and reconfigured them through the bios to see if that was the problem.  I can get UBUNTU to recognize the array as a single drive operating at 500.1mb, but nothing else.  Also, I can't get UBUNTU to format any partition of the drives I create with a FAT32 file system.

Why will UBUNTU recognize the RAID array, but not Windows, nor HP's own Start Smart program?  Am I failing miserably when creating the logical drives - missing some step to the process once setting up the RAID configuration?

Any help at all is appreciated.
