HP Servers that will use the Intel S4600LH2 motherboard?

I spotted the new S4600 series motherboards from Intel last year (released around fall 2012 or to be released early 2013) and from the information I found, memory support is 1.5 TB and the motherboard supports 6 to 8 core Intel processors, 4 sockets on the motherboard.  Does anyone know if HP will be releasing a server that will support this Intel motherboard?

Re: HP Servers that will use the Intel S4600LH2 motherboard?

Hi,

I guess this system board (or HP version) is used in DL560 Gen8

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14395_div/14395_div.HTML

Max DIMM capacity is 1.5TB and supports 4, 6, 8 core processors.

I have attached a image of DL560 Gen8 system board in this post.

But I am unable to show this is the model S4600LH2 that is used in this server.

Thanks.

Re: HP Servers that will use the Intel S4600LH2 motherboard?

As far as I know, HP Proliant servers use HP's proprietary system board designs, to make them fit into a proprietary Proliant chassis. Standard ATX or similar system boards won't fit into Proliant DL chassis. This is because the chassis and system board are optimized to work together, in order to be able to fit a maximum possible number of servers in standard server racks.

The Proliant ML series might use standard form factor system boards, as the chassis packing density is not as important a design criteria for them.

But the _chipset_ used in a DL560 Gen8 system board might be the same as on the Intel S4600LH2 motherboard. Let's have a look at the specs...

On the Intel website, the specifications page of the S4600LH2 points to a chipset called C602, and according to this HP Quickspecs document, the DL560 Gen8 uses a "Intel C600 series" chipset:

http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14395_div/14395_div.HTML

According to this Intel page of the C600 series chipsets, C602 is the lowest model of this chipset series:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/server-chipsets/server-chipset-c600.html

Based on this, we can say that the DL560 Gen8 definitely uses either the exact same chipset as the S4600LH2 (most likely), or a higher tier version of the same chipset series (possible).
