HP Smart Array P400 Controller : "Inconsistent stripe"

A similar issue is described in the following thread: http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447626+1227176780131+28353475&threadId=1263562

We have four different servers (2x DL360G5 + 2x DL380G5) that show the same behavior (inconsistent stripe). I think the odds of this problem being resolved by replacing the controllers are very low, unless an entire batch of controllers turns out to have a common manufacturing problem. I think the issue will manifest itself again after replacing the controller, just wait for the first background surface scan to finish. In the case of our four servers I can be fairly certain the inconsistent stripes are not caused by unexpected power loss or unexpected power cycles. What did strike me as odd was that all four servers contain dual port disks. We have allways used single port disks in all our other servers and I cannot be sure if we ordered the wrong disks or if the wrong disks were delivered by our supplier. Has anyone experienced this issue on single port disks? All four servers contain only DG146BB976 disks with HPDC firmware. Has anyone experienced this issue on other disks (e.g. not DG146BB976 and/or not with HPDC firmware)?

This is the relevant(?) information on the four servers:

Re: HP Smart Array P400 Controller : "Inconsistent stripe"

hi

maybe you already know about this

- try a previous driver for p400
Version: 6.12.0.32 (25 Feb 2008)

- try previous Firmware 4.12
4.12 (B)
23 Jan 2008

- try previous Smart Array SAS/SATA Event Notification Service
Version: 6.8.0.32 (25 Feb 2008)

-run erase utility with no HDDs of course

- reset all Storage components

- that's pretty much it if not get a controller replacement

but I really think that does not affect server performance

just annoying message that can be stopped disabling one of the HP agents in control panel

bye

BTW

Chris added valuable information in that thread

I agree recreate RAID if you don't wanna see it again

and as I say maybe buggy firmware driver generates that message since some people say there was not power loss or anything similar

Re: HP Smart Array P400 Controller : "Inconsistent stripe"

I had this problem on an HP DL380G5 with two P800 controllers. (The error only happened on the P800 that had the server's two internal drives attached to it. The P800 that was attached to an MSA60 didn't get the error.) Upgrading the DL380 from service release 6.5 to 6.6 and installing updated P800 driver software fixed it.

Re: HP Smart Array P400 Controller : "Inconsistent stripe"

I have been following and escalating this issue for one of our clients for over a month since upgrading to the P400 Firmware v5.22.

The Inconsistent Stripe messages are highly intermittent and occurred several times in succession about once a month.

This is the response we finally received from HP after upgrading the Server 2003 Driver and the HP Event Notification Service:

I am the L2 Engineer assigned to this case regarding the Event IDs 24607 problem.

Our Product Division has found that these inconsistent stripe events can be safely ignored. A future version of firmware for the Smart Array P400, P800 and E200 controllers that will resolve this issue is under development. In addition, a public communication in the form of a Customer Advisory also under development.

Hope this helps with peace of mind :)

Re: HP Smart Array P400 Controller : "Inconsistent stripe"

How can we tell the difference between the inconsistent stripe errors that HP says should be ignored and genuine inconsistent stripe errors that are caused by real problems?

FW recently released fix this Inconsistent stripe so it will no be confused whit the real ones

Version: 5.26 (27 Feb 2009)
Fixes

* Fixed an issue on RAID 1 and RAID 1+0 logical drives in which normal operating system-related buffer content changes that occur during write operations are misinterpreted and logged as critical "inconsistent stripe" events."
