HP bl35p, gentoo linux, and the tg3 driver

I'm sure I'll get a few "you're insane" comments, but no matter.

I'm trying to install Gentoo Linux on to an eval bl35p, but while RedHat seems only to need the tg3 driver to load the NICs, my gentoo kernel (with tg3 support built-in, not as a module) doesn't even recognize any GigE devices.

(Of course they still show up in lspci.)

Here's an excerpt of what I get from lspci in RedHat:

03:01.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
Subsystem: Compaq Computer Corporation NC7781 Gigabit Server Adapter (PCI-X, 10,100,1000-T)
