HPE Proliant DL180 Gen9 server high fan noise
HPE Proliant DL180 Gen 9 server has high fan noise when running with non-HP serial RS232 PCIe card
Low fan noise with out the card installed .
RS232 port used for outgoing faxes through a Multitech 56K modem .
Works ok on Proliant ML350 G9 and ML310 G8 servers
. Any ideas on how to fix this issue ?

Re: HPE Proliant DL180 Gen9 server high fan noise
I'd try a USB to Serial adapter

Re: HPE Proliant DL180 Gen9 server high fan noise
serial RS232 port , We have tried using USB to serial but it does not
work with the serial card removed .
It's an issue with the HP server which does not appear to like any
non-HP cards .
We have tried a Starcom single port card and this appeared to work with
fans reducing to about 20% but as soon as a modem was attached , the
fans ramped up to about 80% power and isn't pleasant in an office
environment
I have to say that the fans then did not wind down to about 20 % and
have stayed at 80% constantly even without the external modem attached .
Solution seems to be an on-board serial port as 3rd party cards appear
to be an issue for HPE

Re: HPE Proliant DL180 Gen9 server high fan noise
Check this doc.
http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04683594
Do you have one ot two power supplies and which kind? 550W or 900W?
With one 500W power supply, is it possible that the PCI card draws enough power to make the server cross the the power usage and overheating thresholds?

Re: HPE Proliant DL180 Gen9 server high fan noise
Have you upgraded the system rom and ILO4 to newest versions? Had the same problem with noise, but without serial port installed, and upgrading fixed the noise issues bringing down the fans from 69% to 24%.
My system rom version currently: U20 v2.30 (09/12/2016)
My ILO4 version: 2.50
