Hello everyone
I am currently running in to an odd issue.
I have 8 Proliant Gen10 Servers, which I need to update the firmware on to the newest version (2018.11.0) using the SPP package. At the moment the servers will not boot from the USB I created for the purpose. The USB is shown in the boot menu, but when I try booting from it, the screen just blinks black and then it return to the boot menu.
The steps I have taken:
1) Download the 2018.11.0 SPP package from HPE.com
2) Created the bootable USB with the HP usb bootable creation utility. (Stored in the ISO file)
3) Tried booting from the USB, without luck.
To troubleshoot I have done the following:
- Tried with another SPP (2018.09.0) ISO - Does not work either, same issue.
- Tried with 2 other USB sticks - Does not work either, same issue.
- Tried creating the bootable USB with Rufus - Does not work either, same issue.
- Checked if the BIOS is setup to allow USB boot, which it already were.
- Tried both UEFI and Legacy boot - Does not work either, same issue with either of them.
I have searched the web and the forums, but I cannot seem to find any other case with this issue. Do anybody have an idea what could be wrong?
Thanks in advance!
Regards
A

Re: HPE Proliant DL380p G10, will not boot from SPP usb
Are you plugging into one of the standard USB ports or the one marked iLO? You cannot use the iLO service port for booting the SPP
Since others have reported they've had a drive key that just wouldn't work, we can assume that this is possible. I have tried many differnet USB drive keys over the years, and have not run across one yet that would not work using the HPE USB key utility. Have you set the system for Legacy mode emulation?

SolutionBe aware the maximum USB device size is 32GB.
Just in case.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HPE Proliant DL380p G10, will not boot from SPP usb
I will repeat what you said because I wasted a week troublshooting this. Use 32 GB or smaller...
Larger thumb drives that would boot the G9s no longer work booting the G10s.
I had to trade my help desk 4 x 128 GB thumb drives for 4 x 16 GB thumb drives to boot my new G10s...
(Also, be sure to not use the usb port labeled Ilo.)

Re: HPE Proliant DL380p G10, will not boot from SPP usb
32GB is the limitation of the USB creation utility.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HPE Proliant DL380p G10, will not boot from SPP usb
I have an 8gb flash usb drive, I have tried all the same and cannot get this **bleep** Gen10 to boot and run the SPP update.
can someone provide DUMMY instructions? I have tried all the regular tricks that have worked for 15 years to boot .isos from a usb key, this thing just does not like it.
+ tried YUMI and also YUMI UEFI boot loader.

Re: HPE Proliant DL380p G10, will not boot from SPP usb
I also have this question. Trying to set up 2 G10's right now. I went to use my 8gig USB key with the 2018.11 SPP which I have used to update 5 G8 and 9 devices in the last couple of weeks with no issue, cant get it to boot on the G10. So I rebuilld the USB key with the 2019.03 SPP using the USB key build exe on the SPSS ISO works on the first server, try to get it running on the second server and again its failing. Both G10''s are brand new fesh out the box no config, no OS nothing but plug them in plug in a keyboard and the usb try to boot to USB not working.
Any other tricks or settings on the device that need to be changed?

Yup, this was me... using the USB port labelled ILO. Who knew there was such a thing. Oops. gotta pay more attention. Must have wasted 50 minutes on this.

Re: HPE Proliant DL380p G10, will not boot from SPP usb
It worked for me after changing the boot options to a full discovery scan.
