Handmade system disk disaster recovery

Hi,
my customer wants a cheaper solution to have a system disk safe copy to recover in case of disaster.
The environment is:
Proliant servers with 2x internal HDD for O.S. and applications configured in RAID 1 with integrated SmartArray.
O.S. Win2k3 server
After the full sw installation the internal hdd will not be modified never more

My idea is:
buy a 3rd hdd
make the server installation with OS and apps.
lets the SmartArray to create the mirror on the 2nd hdd.
extract the 2nd hdd from the server and put it into a safe place.
install the 3rd hdd and lets the server to recreate the mirror copy on the new disk.

In case of crash of one of two internal system disks I get the hdd from my safe place and put it into the server.

I think that this can work. MAy anyone confirm this ?
thanks in advance
regards Davide

Re: Handmade system disk disaster recovery

Sound like a plan

You right it's possibly and easy to achieve.
RAID 0+1
ID0 and ID1
Power Down server, Remove ID0 let System Restart, detect missing Drive, enable recovery mode
After add third Drive from O/S (should be identical size or bigger)
General Recommendation to keep drive and Firmware up to date

Re: Handmade system disk disaster recovery

Hi Davide
We made some tests today with our DL380 server. 2 HDD with raid 1, OS win2k3 Server. After the full sw installation we switched off the server and removed the disk0. We started the server with only disk1. That worked fine. After the login we inserted e new disk in slot 0. After 10 minutes the rebuild was finished. Thats fin so far and we have a backup disk0. But know we stopped the server again and removed both disks. In slot 0 we inserted the "backup disk0" and the server did not start anymore with this disk. What's wrong? Do we have to insert a disk also in slot 1? Do you have (anyone) an ideas?
Thanks
regards Urs

Re: Handmade system disk disaster recovery

Hi Davide Depaoli ,

I really appreciated your innovative thing, but it is not possibility.

i.e.

Current RAID1 : HDD1+HDD2

ACTIVITY1:>RAID1 : HDD1+HDD3

ACTIVITY2:>RAID1 : HDD1+HDD2

In this case if you holding HDD3 with system full Image but in such case the Server OS is crashed, if you insert the HDD3 and rebuild to recover the system Image.

In this Scenario from the hdd backup after 6 months we will restored what happen in-between data's we can't able to restored.

My conclusion better then purchased dlt drive and Take backup OBDR MODE( ONE BUTTON DISASTER RECOVERY), So in such case the OS is crashed if can able to restore full image of datas.

Thanks and Regards
