Hardware RAID 1 monitoring tools for Proliant server

Hello!

When a disk fails on our Proliant machine, MySQL slows to a crawl. I would like a warning from the machine about disk failure before it happens or to be able to confirm disk failure so I do not waste so much time trying to track down the mysql problem. Are there management tools for a Fixed Direct Access SCSI-0 device?

What type of the server and RAID controller ?

Proliant DL. By controller what do you mean? Do you meant what type of software controls the RAID array?

Please check the Smart Array controller used in the server for Online Spare option.
If you have that, you can install a drive as a spare drive. Spare drive will be come active when ever there is a drive failure in the server.

If you have DL300 series server you can install ProLiant Support Packs (PSP) http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/psp/index.html and monitor your server (and RAID status) via System Management Homepage http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/agents/index.html

I should have mentioned that I am running FreeBSD on this particular machine. It is also located in a co-location facility so there is limited acces. Next time I am there I will write down the serial number, etc. so I am sure about the model.

In any case, it looks like Proliant Service Pack will not work with my OS. Are there any other options?

Try linux emulator and PSP for Linux http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/linuxemu.html .
