Highest CPU Speed Supported by Proliant 1600?

I have a Proliant 1600 that came with a Slot 1 PIII 500MHz 512k cache 100 FSB CPU. I'm currently running it with dual CPUs (thanks to some help from this forum). Now that I've got everything running the way I want, I'm thinking ahead and wondering if I'll be able to upgrade to faster CPUs in the future. Will my machine accept dual Slot 1 PIII 1GHz 256k cache 100 FSB CPUs or is it maxed out with the dual 500 configuration?

I think the highest they shipped with was PIII 600, don't know if they would handle a 1ghz.

I'm afraid not, there were two models of 1600, a PII and a PIII type.

According to the quickspecs, the fastest processor available is the 600Mhz 512K.

In order to do this, you need to purchase two PIII 600Mhz processors (153555-B21) and the Thermal Upgrade Kit (144003-B22).

It would probably be cheaper to pick up a 1Ghz system from ebay!

The max 600 was because that is the fasterest Intel made of that Family of PIII. After the PIII600 they went to the PIII600e through P1000e all having 256k cache instead. You could go to a PowerLeap processor though to get simple processor speed, but it does not help the buss at all.

I tried the PL-P3/SMP PE 2300 edition processor upgrade from powerlap for my PL 1600. I used a single 1GHz PIII processor running at 100MHz and got an Unsupported Processor Detected System Halted message. Tried all combinations of jumper and switch settings. Using BIOS version 4.14a (11/8/2000).

So, you might want to double check with their tech support before you buy. They do have a good/reasonable RMA process in case things don't work out.
